of the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary,
in the Mwaluganje Hills and a 45 km
drive from Mombasa, Kenya's city seaport
and Coast capital. Travellers Mwaluganje
Camp is set along the shoulder of a
low hill facing a traditional elephant
trail, allowing guests to watch the
elephants from the comfort of their
well-appointed comfortable tents.

Mwaluganje Camp is the only tented camp
in Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary and
guests have the entire 6,000 acres to
themselves .Mwaluganje camp consists
of 20 twin-bedded tents each with its
private timber verandah, shower with
hot and cold water, WC and wash hand
basin. The tents are comfortably furnished
to a very high standard. Mwaluganje
Elephant Sanctuary is close to the south
coast beach resorts and offers virtually
guaranteed sightings of large numbers
of elephants in perfect safety.
Travellers
Mwaluganje Camp has all the comforts one
would expect from a four star hotel. The
camp consists of 20 twin bedded tents (there
is provision for an extra bed), each tent
with its private timber verandah, shower
with hot and cold water, toilet and wash
hand basin. Mwaluganje Camp tents are comfortable
and have a private power supply, 220/240
V. The bird life is prolific and amazingly
varied and bird watchers will find the camp
area and sanctuary full of interest.
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary days may
be hot, reaching 28 degrees centigrade
(approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit)
but the evenings are comfortably cool.
The conventional rainy seasons are May
and June and October and November and
the climate may best be described as
tropical and fairly humid.

Shimba Rainforest Lodge, (Along South
Coast of Mombasa) Kenya
Shimba
Rainforest Lodge is mere forty-five
minutes from the Indian Ocean. Shimba
is a spectacular, award winning, wooden
tree lodge overlooking a waterhole in
the middle of a tropical rainforest
Shimba Hills Game Reserve. The 192 square
kilometer Game Reserve is the last remaining
habitat of the sable antelope in East
Africa.
Shimba
Rainforest Lodge can accommodate 65
people. All rooms have balcony vantage
points overlooking the waterhole. The
rooms are small but well designed and
cheerful with big windows, twin beds
and a ceiling fan. A wooden walkway
extends 120m into the tropical rainforest.
At the end is a place for bird watchers
to sit quietly and enjoy the birds and
butterflies, the sights and sounds of
the forest and soothing trickle of water
flowing from a spring.
Shimba Rainforest Lodge dining room
is a covered verandah facing the floodlit
waterhole. There's a special atmosphere
of a night in the jungle, the rasp of
cicadas, croaking of frogs and the screams
of the bush babies who often visit the
bar for tit bits. Shimba Rainforest
Lodge guests can enjoy a walk to the
Sheldrick's falls which is generally
a 2 - 3 hour excursion either morning
or afternoon. Guests drive for about
20 minutes through the reserve to the
`set-off' point.

Lodge is located in an absolutely gorgeous
location in Shimba Hills National Reserve
on the edge of an escarpment overlooking
the Mwalugange Elephant Sanctuary.
Built to extremely high standards Kutazama
Lodge is a luxury retreat which offers full
use of the main house areas (lounges and
dining area), and guest accommodation in
private suites each with its own verandah,
decking and huge beds. Kutazama Lodge property
extends to 31 acres, of which 7 acres are
electrically fenced both for guest security
and to keep the elephants out of the garden
areas! The grounds are extensively landscaped
and terraced with numerous meandering pathways
and steps leading to viewing vantage points
or shaded patio areas. All mature indigenous
trees have been left in situ and a reforestation
programme, together with the planting of
complimentary exotic trees, shrubs and flowers
creates a tropical paradise for the guests
to explore and enjoy.
The
grounds are alive with many species of birds
and exotic butterflies and the hosts have
prepared lists of what guests might expect
to see throughout the year. Game drives,
walks and picnics are organized in the elephant
sanctuary or in Shimba Hills and any trip
and activities in the Diani area can easily
be arranged for guests.
