Detailed Itinerary
Day
1: Nairobi –
Fly to Lewa Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Your safari begins with a flight from Nairobi departing
in the mid morning from the city’s Wilson Airport
(the domestic airport). Your scenic flight over the
northern slopes of Mount Kenya and lands at Lewa Wildlife
Conservancy approximately 1 hour later.
You’ll
be met by your hosts and driven through the reserve
to your accommodation, Lewa Safari Camp (an excellent
alternative we often use is Lewa Wilderness Lodge).
Settle into camp and after lunch, enjoy a late afternoon
wildlife drive.
Overnight at Lewa Safari Camp
Meal Plan: {Lunch and dinner}
Days 2 &
3: Explore Lewa Downs Lewa Downs
Enjoy
an incredible wildlife experience on Lewa Downs, a stunning
reserve featuring savannah and acacia grasslands with
all the Big Five, large herds of plains animals and
the one of Africa's most important black rhino populations.
Lewa
is home to over 420 species of birds, Reticulated Giraffe,
Cheetah and many other endangered species. The reserve
was created in the late 1980s from a former cattle ranch
by the owners, the Craig family.
The
initial purpose was to preserve the last remaining black
rhino in northern Kenya; however the reserve has grown
in importance for all species and now acts as a catalyst
for communities across northern Kenya to conserve their
wildlife and natural environment. Your stay will provide
fascinating insight into the important work of Lewa
in this respect.
Overnight at Lewa Safari Camp
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner}
Day 4 –
Begin Walking
Safari Lewa Downs
Your
Masai warrior guides will meet you at Lewa Safari Camp
and you will set out on foot across the plains of Lewa,
walking through savannah and acacia groves.
Today
you may see elephant, grevy zebra and rhino and tonight’s
camp is by a river on the northern edge of the reserve.
Accommodation: Camping
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner}
Day 5 –
Continue on the
walking safari Lewa Downs
Continue
across the high plains of Lewa Downs and descend to
your camp on the edge of the Il Ngwesi conservancy.
The
views over the Mathews range to the north are fabulous
today and you will begin to see the Ngare Ndare river
valley ahead of you. Enjoy spacious tents, fantastic
food and a bottle of wine enjoyed by the light of the
camp fire.
Accommodation: Camping
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner}
Days 6 &
7 – Walking safari by Ngare Ndare river Lewa
Downs
Your
walking safari continues through the wooded scenery
of the Ngare Ndare river valley. Encounter Masai herdsmen
as they water their cattle by the river and pass remote
tribal settlements.
Elephant
are frequently sighted by the river and your final night
on the walking safari is spent in Ndofu Camp, the camp
of elephants.
Accommodation: Camping
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner}
Day 8 –
Walking Safari
ends at Il Ngwesi Eco lodge Il Ngwesi
Your
walking safari ends today at Il Ngwesi, a stunning community
owned wilderness lodge set high upon a rock outcrop
overlooking the plains of northern Kenya and mountains
beyond.
As
an equally great alternative to Il Ngwesi, we also recommend
Tassia lodge, a further community owned lodge which
operates very closely with Il Ngwesi and is located
a few kilometers downstream.
Accommodation: Il Ngwesi Eco lodge
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner}
Day 9 –
Relax and unwind
at Il Ngwesi Il Ngwesi
Enjoy
the incredible views and swim in one of Africa’s
most spectacular swimming pools. Il Ngwesi has won a
host of international awards for innovation in community-conservation
and eco tourism.
The
lodge provides a relaxing and high quality holiday experience
but also serves a more important purpose in providing
an example for other communities in northern Kenya who
want to conserve their wildlife and in doing so, derive
benefit from eco tourism.
At
Il Ngwesi, morning and evening wildlife drives and guided
bush walks are available as optional activities. Tassia
Lodge offers a very similar, high quality, community-driven
experience.
