Arusha National Park lies just 25 kilometers east of Arusha Town, and is ideal for a rewarding day trip from Arusha or Moshi.

Arusha National park covers an area of about 137square kilometers. It is located near Arusha town between the peaks of Mountains Kilimanjaro and Meru. The Park and the town derive their name from Wa-Arusha people who traditionally live in this area.

The Ngurdoto Crater, Momela Lakes, the highland mountain forest, and the rugged Mount Meru (4575m) are the four distinctive features of the park.

Although small, the park has a wealth of wildlife including Colobus monkeys, velvet monkeys, bushbucks, buffaloes, red forest duikers, hippos, elephants and giraffes. Bird life, especially waterfowl, is abundant and interesting.

You can do some hiking with an armed ranger at the Ngurdoto Crater and to the Mt. Meru Crater. This is a good trip for people who have a short stay in Tanzania.

Arusha National Park Safari Itinerary for the Day

0700 – 0800 Hours: Breakfast at your Hotel.

0830 Hours: After breakfast at your hotel depart and drive 25km East of Arusha Town to Arusha National Park. The park (137km²), has terrain ranging from open savannah through acacia scrub lands to Afro-montane cloud and rain forest and Afro-alpine vegetation similar to Mount Kilimanjaro.

There are several alkaline lakes and the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater. Mammal species include elephant, buffalo, various primates, giraffe and leopard.

Hiking is allowed if accompanied by an armed guard and the climb up Mount Meru is superb, often giving the best views available of Mount Kilimanjaro. At 4,556m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and is located in the Arusha National Park.

1230 Hours: Lunch is served at Momela Wildlife Lodge.

14.00 Hours: Another game drive in the park is planned. Hatari was filmed on location in Tanganyika, (in what is now Arusha National Park Northern Tanzania).

Hatari is a 1962 American film directed by Hawks and starring John Wayne John Wayne Marion Mitchell Morrison, born Marion Robert Morrison, better known by his stage name John Wayne, was an American film actor, director and producer.

He epitomized rugged masculinity and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walk and height. The title means "danger" in Swahili, which was mentioned in the film as well.

Portraying a group of hunters, the film presents an interesting if antiquated portrait of Africa still dominated by non-Africans.

The film is extremely popular because of the dramatic wildlife chases and the magnificent backdrop scenery of Mount Meru, a dormant volcano.

18.00 Hours: The tour ends in Arusha town in the evening.
