Sweetwaters
Game Sanctuary – Samburu Game Reserve 4 Day/3
Nights Kenya
Safari
Sweetwaters Game Reserve
is 70,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views
across the plains to the snow capped peaks of Mount
Kenya. This game sanctuary is the closest reserve
to Nairobi (2.5 hours drive) home to all the big five
game, and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of
any park or reserve in Kenya. Its popular waterhole
is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded
rarely seen game viewing.
Game drives at Sweetwaters
are indeed a pleasure. Game viewing may also take
the form of game walks accompanied by our Resident
Naturalist, and game rides on horseback. Camel riding,
night game drives and "bush" lunches or
dinners are a delight. The Chimpanzee Sanctuary is
most informative and entertaining and should all be
visited while in the Game Reserve. The Sweetwaters
Chimpanzee Sanctuary is incorporated within the Ol
Pejeta Conservancy and is the only place in Kenya
where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent
species can be seen.
Samburu
National Reserve is not very well-known, but definitely
worth a visit. It is situated on the banks of the
Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya. This means plenty of water,
trees and shade to attract wildlife like elephant,
lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah
plains. Leopards are also regularly spotted. The reserve
is not particularly well-known and is therefore not
too crowded - a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves
are often overflowing with tourists. It is often grouped
together with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National
Reserves as they lie so close together.
Detailed
Itinerary
Day
1
Nairobi – Sweetwaters/Ol Pejeta
This
morning we depart Nairobi and proceed north, driving
through lush tea and coffee estates to Sweetwaters
Tented Camp. Sweetwaters land, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy
and its sumptuous ranch were once the private domain
of famed multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi. We visit
the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established
by the Jane Goodall Institute to provide sanctuary
to orphaned chimps, and the specially protected and
fenced refuge of black rhino with its stunning forty
specimens! In fact Sweetwaters boasts excellent game
viewing with the highest ratio of game to area of
any park or reserve in Kenya. Moreover, the camp has
its own private waterhole and salt-lick so we’ll
be guaranteed unprecedented close encounters. Whether
its day or night game drives, camel trekking, lion
tracking, al fresco dining or relaxing by pool, Sweetwaters
is bound to delight.

2
Sweetwaters – Samburu Game Reserve
This
morning we travel by road to Kenya’s northern
frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful
with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso
Nyiro River. It is also one of Kenya’s most
protected areas and home to species only found north
of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy’s
zebras and Beisa oryxes. We also enjoy Larsens Tented
Camp or Samburu Intrepids Camp, our luxurious hostelry
set beneath a canopy of acacia trees along the banks
of the river.

Day
3
Samburu Game Reserve
Dawn
breaks in golden bands as we start our day in the
bush by scanning the river from our tent’s veranda
with a cup of steaming coffee in hand. Before the
dew is off the grass, we’re off in pursuit of
the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that
thrive in the reserve’s grasslands and acacia
woodlands. And so the day is spent in alternating
pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation
in our cozy camp.
