Days 2,

Meru National Park
Your first
flight will take you east beyond the Nyambeni Hills
to a great wild tract of land; several hundred square
miles of superb game country known as Meru National
Park. This area is a beautiful example of the savannah
country of north and eastern Kenya, broken by open
plains, bisected by many clear streams and dotted
with baobab trees. It boasts all the species typical
in the dry north such as oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk
as well as elephant and massive herds of buffalo.
The great Tana River forms the park’s southern
boundary. The lodge can sleep twenty people in thatched
cottages on a hilltop.

Day 5 & Day 6
Laikipia
Plateau
Leaving Meru, fly west to Borana,
a small and exclusive lodge hidden away on a large
game ranch. It is set on a hilltop, looking down
from the Laikipia Plateau onto the Samburu plains
in the hazy distance but immediately below is a
large water hole, frequented by greater kudu and
elephant. The buildings are truly unique in design,
the exteriors taking their cue from the rugged setting
and the whole accommodating up to 14 people in magnificent,
spacious cedar and stone thatched rooms all very
originally furnished. There is a stunning swimming
pool. As well as walking and driving on the ranch,
visits can be made to the neighboring rhino sanctuary
and horses are available so that one may ride amongst
the giraffe and zebra, which are quite tame. A sortie
may be made up on to the mountain for fly-fishing.
Overnight at Borana Lodge

Dinner}
Days 7
& 8
Lake
Baringo
Flying now still further west over
the Laikipia Plateau, looking down on many miles
of fabulous scenery, the land finally drops away
into the Great Rift Valley and Lake Baringo. The
lake can be explored by boat, approaching to within
a few feet of hippopotamus and crocodile. The tented
camp on its island in the middle is wonderfully
picturesque and high up beside the swimming pool
one can look down over the entire lake and hundreds
of square miles of open country stretching away
to distant mountains. The spectacular Lake Bogoria
to the south teems with half a million birds, a
pink sheen of flamingo on the water with a backdrop
of high cliffs and steam from the many hot springs.
Overnight at Samatian Island

Days 9,
10 & 11
Maasai Mara Game Reserve
Yet another
flight takes you now further west and south –
as far as you will go in that direction –
to the vast rolling plains of Maasailand and the
endless herds of game for which the Mara is famous.
Here a vehicle will meet you and take you to Il
Moran Camp, a beautifully appointed permanent camp.
Here the wildlife sightings are always amazing and
the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good.
Patience is often rewarded with the incredible sight
of lions springing from cover onto their prey or
a cheetah racing along hard on the heels of a fleet-footed
gazelle. Amongst these teeming numbers of buffalo,
topi, zebra, and gazelle are the Maasai with their
great herds of cattle. On one of your days in the
Mara you may choose to go up in the hot air balloon
(which lifts off conveniently close to the camp).
To do this you have to rise early and the vehicle
will take you to the launch site on the other side
of the river. It is here, in the Mara, where you
can really expect to lie in bed at night listening
to the roar of lions. The thin canvas walls of the
tent provide immense comfort.
