Southern Tanzania Safari 8 Days 7 Nights explores Selous Game Reserve – one of the world's largest and most untouched reserves and Ruaha National Park – a transition zone to wildlife species endemic to both Eastern and Southern Africa. Activities include game drives, bush walks and river excursions - lending to a true African wilderness experience and evoking romance, mystique and spiritual delight.

 

With an area four times that of the Serengeti; the Selous is home to over one million large animals. At half the size of Selous, Ruaha is a naturalist's paradise with over 500 species of birds and both Ruaha and Selous are home to the "Big 5".

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Zanzibar or Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania Arrival

Shake off the jet lag and stretch out for a comfortable night's rest in Zanzibar or Dar-es-salaam

 

Overnight at the Holiday Inn Dar-es-salaam or Serena Zanzibar

Day 2

Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar – Fly to Selous Game Reserve

Our safari begins this morning by a transfer to Dar Es Salaam International airport where a short flight takes us to Selous Game Reserve. Upon arrival we are met by our hosts /African Spice Driver guides and transferred to our Camp for Lunch. After lunch an afternoon game drive is planned in Selous were Elephant, Hunting Dogs, Hippos along the banks of the River, Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo and other wildlife may be seen. Returning for dinner and overnight at our Camp.

 

Overnight at Rufiji River Camp or Selous Safari camp or Lake Manze Safari Camp or Sand Rivers

Days 3, 4 & 5

Selous Game Reserve

The next three days are spent in the park with the various activities to choose from be it by boat, vehicle or foot, your guides will personally tailor all activities to suit the guest so that they get the most out of the Reserve in the time they have available. All Selous activities generally go out after breakfast, quite different to other places due to the topography of the land and the animal's dependence on drinking water.

 

The main game movements in Selous occur a little later in the day as most animals make their way down to the lakes to drink only after the sun has come up, before this time most of the animals are far inland where there is little road networks for driving. In this way our guests can relax and after a nice leisurely breakfast embark on a drive or boat with a full stomach and then can stay out in the reserve all the way until lunch.

 

After some more food and a small siesta, guests can then go out again in the late afternoon from about 16h00 when animals generally come back to life again providing more interesting game viewing. All activities must return to camp after sunset for about 19h00 as this is the rule of the park. Night Drives are not allowed in Selous.

Days 6, 7 & 8

Selous – Ruaha National Park

Morning breakfast and then drive to the airstrip for 09:30 schedule plane to Ruaha National Park; pick up and transfer to Ruaha River Lodge for lunch and rest, late afternoon game drive till the sunset, dinner and overnight at your Camp. The following days you will have the choice of either a morning and evening game drive with lunch back at the lodge or a full day game drive with picnic lunch. Ruaha National Park has a wealth of different habitats to explore, from grassy plains, escarpment woodlands and rocky kopjes. Hippo pools and an abundance of bird life make for many alternative game drives. Alternatively, you can take a guided walk (supplement) along the river with a lift back once you reach your destination.

 

Overnight at Rufiji Camp or Ruaha River Lodge

Day 9

Ruaha – Fly to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar – Depart

One last game viewing opportunity this morning and then fly back to Dar-es-salaam or Zanzibar. Relax, enjoy lunch, or shop for collectibles before your evening departure flight.
