Shompole Wilderness Tented Camp
Shompole Wilderness Tented Camp is hidden away on the fig tree-shaded river banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River within the Shompole conservancy on the bottom of the Great Rift Valley, close to the Kenya–Tanzania border. The camp is located in the Shompole group ranch and is a collaboration between the local Maasai community and Shompole Wilderness Ltd.
Shompole Wilderness Camp is set in the same location as what was previously known as Loisiijo Lodge. Lake Magadi borders it to the east, Lake Natron to the south, the Nguruman Escarpment to the west, and Olkiramatian Group Ranch to the north.
The Shompole region alone is home to 21 carnivore species, all the large mammal species except for the Rhino, and, at our last count, 435 species of birds. The Shompole ecosystem is unique in that it is owned and managed by the Maasai. It is not a National Park, and therefore we are unlikely to see other visitors and have the freedom to be outside the vehicles rather than in them!
The du Toit family and their local Maasai team manage the camp together.
Shompole Wilderness Camp Accommodation
At Shompole Wilderness Camp, we have six ‘rooms’ which are spacious tents set up on wooden decks. Each tent can be set up as a double or a twin room, and has a flushing toilet and shower. In addition, we can set up a children’s tent on the veranda of two of the tents, should this be necessary.
Each tent is located so that they are private, and you can’t see one tent from another. Each tent has running water, and there is hot water available in the evenings, heated during the afternoon by the generator.
How to get to Shompole Wilderness Camp
Access by road: Approximately a 4-hour drive from Nairobi (subject to the quality of the road), through Magadi.
Access by air: Charter flights from Nairobi are about 25 minutes to the “Ranger” airstrip, followed by a 25-minute transfer into camp.
Shompole Wilderness Activities
🗸 The Shompole Hide
Spend an evening, early morning, or even the whole night in our Hide watching any birds and wildlife that may come to drink at the waterhole.
🗸 Baboon Walks Around the Lale’enok Resource Centre
If you would like the chance to walk with a habituated troop of baboons with a local guide who knows the troop well, then do tell us, and we can arrange for this unique opportunity.
🗸 Game Drives (Day or Night)
At your preferred time of day or night, we can have one of our experienced guides accompany you on a game drive through the Shompole ecosystem.
🗸 River Swimming, Tubing, Kayaking
The availability of these activities is largely in Mother Nature’s hands, so it will depend on the water levels of the river, but all are available when the river levels allow.
🗸 Understanding Local Conservation Work
We work closely with and support the local community and a local conservation organization, SORALO, in their efforts to conserve the local environment, wildlife, and way of life.
🗸 Animal Tracking / Bird Walks
The dusty paths and roads in and around camp make for great tracking. Do arrange any time if you would like to go for a walk to learn about tracks and signs and birds.
🗸 Bird Hide
For bird enthusiasts, we have built a small bird hide with a small water hole right in camp, near the pool. Here, you can spend many happy hours watching and photographing the incredible diversity of birds in the area.
🗸 Cultural Home Visits
If you would like to spend some time in a local Maasai home learning about their daily life, we can certainly arrange this for you. The Shompole Maasai people are very welcoming and are happy to invite you into their homes for an afternoon or a morning. Photography is welcome; however, please try not to take pictures of children’s faces (it is illegal under the Child Protection Act of Kenya) and ensure you do not share such images on social media.
🗸 Run Wild
If you feel like stretching your legs a little more than a walk, then we are happy to accompany you on a run out on the open plains behind camp. Running here needs to be done early morning or late evening to avoid overheating, and we will make sure a car comes with you to keep you safe from wildlife and exhaustion.
🗸 Buy Maasai Beadwork
If you would like to purchase any local artifacts or beadwork, please let one of us know in advance so that we can arrange for some ladies from the local villages to come to the camp with items to choose from.

Shompole Wilderness Tented Camp Information
Shompole Wilderness Tented Camp has 4 luxury tents overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. The tents have fans and furnished verandahs, and en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers and flush toilets. Each tent has solar lighting.
The camp features a bush kitchen that serves a variety of local and international cuisine. Guests can enjoy their meals in the spacious, shady mess tent outdoors. The mess tent and the sitting room overlook the Uaso Nyiro River and are shaded by huge fig trees lining the river banks.
The style is simple and rustic, built with local volcanic stone walls and thatch roofs made by the local Maasai women. Wildlife is abundant in this relatively unknown corner of Kenya, with only rhinos missing from the diverse ecosystem.
A typical game drive, or walk, could yield plenty of plains, including zebra, wildebeest, Grant’s gazelle, giraffe, and cats such as lion, cheetah, or the elusive leopard. Elephants are also available within the area.
Activities in the Shompole Wilderness Tented Camp include: game drives, tubing, village visits, kayaking, and walking with the baboons and cattle.
