Arusha 1 Day Sakila Village Tour Stingless Bees Project (0930 Hours -1630 Hours)

Our 1-Day Sakila Village Tour with a Stingless Bees Project offers an engaging agricultural and cultural experience. Highlights include visiting coffee/banana farms, learning about biogas technology, a local lunch, and hands-on stingless bee honey harvesting.

This one-day excursion from Arusha takes you to the village of Sakila, located on the foothills of Mount Meru, some 40 km east of Arusha. After breakfast at your hotel/ residence in Arusha, you will travel to Sakila village.

The tour begins with a visit to a coffee farm, where you will learn how coffee is grown from young trees to harvest. Here, you can taste freshly roasted coffee while watching the roasting and grinding process. After a cup of coffee, you will visit banana and coffee plantations where you will learn how the Meru tribe living in the area grows these foods and uses them as cash crops.

Sakila village offers excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. After the farm tour, we visit a local home to learn how biogas technology works. In Tanzania’s non-urban areas, 80% of the population cooks over an open fire and therefore relies on wood (or charcoal) for cooking.

This is about 30 million people. We learn the benefits of biogas technology, including providing farming families with clean fuel for cooking and lighting, saving time spent gathering wood, and reducing their costs for firewood, charcoal, kerosene, and artificial fertilizer.

At 1230 Hours, we enjoy a local lunch and some soft drinks. In the afternoon, you will visit the stingless honey bee project to learn how the stingless honey bee, or simply the Meliponine beekeeping project, improves livelihoods for poor families in rural areas. Beekeeping activities raise their income by 25%.

And at about 1500 Hours, depart by road back to Arusha.
