6 Days 5 Nights Lake Naivasha & Masai Mara Road Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

0800 Hours: Depart your Nairobi hotel or airport for a 2-hour scenic drive descending the Great Rift Valley
1030 Hours: Arrive at Lake Naivasha, check into your lodge, and settle in for a hot lunch
1530 Hours: Enjoy an afternoon boat ride on the lake to spot hippos and rich birdlife, followed by a guided walking safari among grazing wildlife on Crescent Island
1830 Hours: Return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight

Day 2: Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara Game Reserve

0800 Hours: After an early breakfast, check out and begin the drive to the Masai Mara
1300 Hours: Arrive at your Masai Mara camp or lodge in time for a hot lunch
1530 Hours: Head out for your first afternoon game drive to search for the “Big Five” (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos)
1830 Hours: Return to the camp for sundowners, dinner, and overnight

Day 3 & 4: Full-Day Game Drives in the Masai Mara

0630 Hours: Depart camp for an early morning game drive (the best time to see predators active)
0830 Hours: Enjoy a “bush breakfast” out in the reserve, or return to camp for a late morning meal
1100 Hours: Relax at the lodge, use the pool, or opt for a cultural visit to a traditional Maasai Village
1530 Hours: Head out on an afternoon game drive. (Alternatively, you can pack a picnic lunch and do an all-day drive deep into the reserve)
1830 Hours: Return to camp before dark for dinner and relaxation

Day 5: Hells Gate National Park Excursion (Or extended Mara)

Note: Many travelers use this day to return to Naivasha for a full-day biking or walking safari in Hell’s Gate National Park, though you can also use this as an extra relaxed day in the Mara

Day 6: Masai Mara to Nairobi

This affordable 6-day road Safari takes you to the two most famous wildlife destinations in Kenya – the fabled Masai Mara Game Reserve and one of the scenic Great Rift Valley lakes of Naivasha.

This safari begins in Nairobi and journeys by road to Lake Naivasha – a serene freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley. This beautiful lake is home to exceptional numbers of water birds. We stay at Loldia House, an original Kenyan home set on an old farm on the shores of Lake Naivasha.

With 2 nights at Loldia House, we have a variety of cultural and traditional safari activities to enjoy, such as Day and night game drives in the bush of Loldia Ranch, which can be quite productive, with zebra, giraffe, and impala invariably seen, hyenas, mongooses, and spring hares quite common, and leopard and aardvark seen more rarely.

Around the house itself, you can: go walking, jogging, or running (accompanied by a guide); explore the garden’s birdlife (with a bird guide); visit the working farm; play tennis (book in advance); or do a school visit to Loldia Primary School.

You will also take a trip to the renowned Lake Nakuru National Park with a picnic lunch. The park is home to black rhinos, southern white rhinos, flamingos, plains grazers, lions, leopards, and plains mammals.

The tour continues to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Mara is world-famous for the massive wildebeest herds and numerous other herbivores, such as Thompson’s gazelles, zebra, and eland, that migrate here annually.

This spectacular Wildebeest Migration, also known as the Great Migration, takes place between July and October. The abundance of migrating herbivores attracts large numbers of predators, including many big cats.

Large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, leopards, hyenas, topi, and rhinos also roam the acacia-studded plains, hosting an array of other grazers and predators. We return to Nairobi after our 3-night stay in the Masai Mara by road, concluding our adventure-filled 6-day wildlife safari.
