Shimba Hills National Reserve 2 Days 1 Night Safari from Mombasa is a short wildlife vacation to Shimba Hills National Park located 50 km south of Mombasa town, in the Kwale district of the Coast Province. The Safari departs and ends in Mombasa, Kenya.
On day 1, your guide collects you from your accommodation in Mombasa. We drive straight to Shimba Hills National Reserve. It’s about a 35-minute drive from Diani Beach to the Shimba Hills. Arriving at the park gate, we check in, enter the park, and the wildlife viewing adventures begin!
Shimba Hills’ climate is hot and humid, with an average annual temperature of 24°C (75°F), but the area benefits from coastal breezes, which also create mist in the mornings. Shimba Hills National Reserve is an exceptional safari destination for seeing African elephants, hosting nearly 600 of these giant mammals in the park.
It’s not just elephants that we’ll see on our game drives, however, as Shimba Hills is home to a rich variety of wild animals. Shimba Hills National Reserve is the only place where the rare Roan and Sable Antelopes can be sighted. We arrive at the lodge inside Shimba Hills Park at about lunchtime and check into our accommodation before having lunch.
Later in the afternoon, we embark on an exciting game drive in the wildlife haven of Shimba Hills. Wildlife includes black-and-white colobus, Maasai giraffes, plains zebra, buffalo, waterbuck, reedbuck, hyena, warthog, giraffe, elephant, leopard, lion, baboon, Sykes’s vervet and colobus monkey, serval, duiker, suni, and bush pig.
We’re sure to see warthogs and the world’s largest flightless bird – the ostrich. There are many birds, including 111 different recorded species. There are even more birds to be seen during the spring migration. Bird shooting is only permitted outside the reserve. In the early evening, we return to the lodge and enjoy dinner.
On day 2, we wake up bright and early this morning and start our day with coffee or tea and a light snack of rusks (traditional tea biscuits). Then, we venture back out into the wilderness surrounding us in our customized safari vehicle.
Mornings are a brilliant time for game viewing and bird watching because many creatures are at their most active in the early hours of the day, especially the predators. Our morning of wildlife adventures brings us back to the lodge for breakfast.
Then we check out and hop back into our safari vehicle for one last game drive on our way out of the national park. Making our way through Shimba Hills, we keep an eye out for animals large and small, from towering elephants to little flightless dung beetles. Exiting Shimba Hills, we drive back to Mombasa.
