Ngong
Hills Hiking/ Walking Day Tour of Nairobi makes
it a very popular weekend walking/ Hiking destination
as an African Spice Safaris Tour. Ngong Hills (7 Hills)
are a popular day-trip safari destination for guests
including school groups, hikers, picnickers, professional,
amateur runners and worshippers. The hills can become
quite busy over the weekends!
Professional
and amateur runners will also be found in the morning
jogging up and down the steep slopes. The
highest peak on the knuckle-shaped Ngong hills is at
2460 meters/ 8070 Feet
above sea level, and the whole mountain range is a gazetted
forest reserve covering an area of over 21,000 square
Kilometers.
The
Ngong Hills featured in the film ‘Out of Africa',
which was based on the book of the same name by Karen
Blixen. Karen Blixen suggested the name “Ngong”
came from the Maasai word for “knuckles”
and indeed the row of hills do look like a set of knuckles.
The
Ngong Hills are where Denys Finch Hatton, Karen Blixen’s
lover, is buried and your guide should be able to point
to the exact location. The hills were a favorite place
for Blixen and Finch Hatton to go hunting, especially
for lions.
The
lions are gone now though, so it is safe to walk and
enjoy the same beautiful scenery the couple enjoyed
100 years ago.

Ngong
Hills Hiking/ Walking Day Tour of Nairobi
Description
Our
day trip begins at 0700 Hours from your hotel or residence
and drive to the Ngong Hills. We take Ngong Road and
go past Dagoretti Corner, Karen and Ngong Town till
Ngong Police Station. At this point we will get an armed
escort (Ranger) from the Kenya Wildlife Services and
also a local guide.
The
sharp spine of the Ngong Hills stretches for 11.5 kilometers
and takes about 5-6 hours (without long rest breaks)
to walk from end to end. The hike up Ngong Hills starts
from Ngong town at the northern foot of the hills 1961m
above sea level, and traverses the whole range to the
southern end at Kona Baridi.
Depending, on how fit you are the whole journey can
take 4 hours to 5 Hours at most. The first 2 kilometers
from Ngong Police Station are a gradual ascent through
human settlements until you get to a Kenya Wildlife
Barrier barrier indicating the start of the Ngong Hills
forest reserve.
From
here on, you go past a wind farm, before climbing the
first steep hill leading to an area populated with Radio
repeater station masts.
The
trail thins out and descents into a trough before you
climb the next steep hill. Just when you think the worst
is over, the rolling hills seem to keep popping up,
with each taking its toll on you. The highest peak (7th
Hill called Lamwia) on the knuckle-shaped Ngong hills
is at 2460 meters/ 8070 Feet above sea level
Thankfully,
the views all round are magnificent, making the effort
worthwhile. 15 Kilometers to the east is the Nairobi
National Park, to the North East is Nairobi city views,
and to the west the hills overlook Masai Manyattas 1,000
meters down in the Rift Valley.
On
a lucky day, you are likely to encounter buffalos around
the fourth hill, on account of the abundant bushes at
these higher altitudes on the range. To your right is
a fantastic view of the Great Rift Valley, while on
the far left is a view of the City of Nairobi.
There
is a long, sloping walk downward to "kona baridi"
corner - cold corner - which is where our driver meets
you and drives you back to your residence/ Hotel.
