Tortilis
Camp Amboseli is named after the flat-topped,
umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated
in one of Amboseli's areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland,
with the majestic backdrop of Africa's highest mountain,
and the World’s highest free-standing mountain,
snow-capped Kilimanjaro.
Game
drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place
both inside the park, and within a private 30,000 acre
game concession. Amboseli National Park is best known
for its unrivalled views of Kilimanjaro and the local
Elephant population. There are over 1000 Elephants in
the Parks eco-system, featuring some of the largest
in Africa.
Tortilis
Camp Amboseli tents are all large and spacious, with
king or twin beds, elegant en suite bathrooms. There
is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely
built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with
magnificent views of Kilimanjaro.
Tortilis
Camp’s tents are inviting and luxurious with Mt.
Kilimanjaro peering down over the entire camp. Tortilis
Camp’s Tents can fit one extra bed, for children
under the age of 16 year only. The 17 spacious en-suite
tents consist of a main bedroom (with wooden floors),
permanent en-suite bathroom (hot running water, stone
floors, shower and flush toilet) and spacious veranda.
Tortilis Camp Amboseli Family House
consist of 1 en-suite double bedroom, 1 en-suite twin
bedroom, and a spacious sitting / dining room with veranda.
Tortilis
Camp’s tent each leads from a bedroom with expansive
king-size or generous twin beds, through a dressing
area into modern bathrooms with pressured hot showers
and flush toilets. Each tent is raised up on a wooden
deck and sheltered by a Makuti (thatched) roof overhanging
a large verandah, ideal for an early afternoon siesta.
From
the comfort of your own private verandah, you can see
for miles across the plains of Amboseli into Tanzania.
Relax in the lounge and gaze at the awe-inspiring view
of Africa's highest mountain: Kilimanjaro. Tortilis
Camp Amboseli tents are naturally screened by trees
and shrubs from others.
At
night, the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep. Before
evening drinks and dinner, enjoy the view from your
tent verandah. Watch elephant families close by as they
forage just outside camp.
Guests
sleep under canvas, but in style. Tortilis Camp Amboseli
tents offer large comfortable beds, elegant bathrooms
and a hot cup of tea at your bedside when you wake up.

Why
Stay at Tortilis
Camp, Amboseli?
*
Tortilis Camp’s tents are airy and all are on
a raised wooden platform, sheltered by a Makuti (thatched)
roof
*
Experienced Camp guides know how to make a bush walk
or safari game drive 'come alive' for young guests
*
Tortilis Camp welcomes Children. Early mealtimes and
a baby-listening service are available, and during
the day
*
In the heat of the day, parents can relax by the swimming
pool whilst kids enjoy a refreshing dip, with iced-drinks
available from the poolside bar.
*
Amboseli National Park is a place of contrasts: during
the hot dry season, mirages appear on the dusty horizon;
year around, the elephant herds follow their ancient
rituals, migrating daily from the Tortilis forests
to the swamps. In the green season water birds: Flamingo,
Pelican. Egyptian Geese flock to the park and the
arid plains turn emerald green overnight.
* In Amboseli, the traditional cultural heritage is
strong: the Masai communities adhere to an age-old
lifestyle, herding and trading cattle; a life which
they will share with you in their Manyattas (Masai
homes), a circle of dung and mud huts protected by
a barrier of thorns against the predators.
* Tortilis Camp has raised funds to build a school
for the local villages; visits to the school and neighboring
villages can be arranged.
* Tortilis Camp, Masai Guides lead walks into the
bush, passing on knowledge of traditional medicinal
and uses of local flora and Masai folklore.
* A walk in the bush is part of the magic of a safari:
following the spoor of the animals passing camp the
night before, smelling the crushed leaves where animals
have fed, listening to the bird calls and watching
them overhead, this way you touch and feel the wild.
