Kampala 1-Day Tour Sipi Falls Mount Elgon Hike is an affordable, safe, guided Uganda hiking tour to Sipi Falls, located in the foothills of Mount Elgon, just at the edge of Mount Elgon National Park, and around 270 km from Kampala.
The Falls are located in the Eastern part of Uganda (in the Kapchorwa district) near Mbale and close to the Kenyan border. Sipi Falls (elevation of 1,775 metres) is a spectacular series of waterfalls located in Mbale, roughly 5 hours by road from Kampala.
Our trip takes us to Kapchorwa, where you reach the base of the Sipi falls, and hike with knowledgeable guides as you explore the 3 falls. This area is where most hikes to Mt. Elgon begin. When you reach the top, the second-highest Sipi Falls comes first. It plunges 85 metres before concluding in a spectacular splash.
The next fall is the smallest, at 65 metres. The last fall is the tallest at 100 metres. The second of the Sipi Falls is the highest, with a magnificent drop of 85 metres. Following this is the smallest fall, dropping 65 metres. Finally, the grandest and tallest plunge is the last at a lofty 100 metres.
Hiking to these falls offers scenic views of Lake Kyoga, the Karamoja lowlands, coffee plantations, and surrounding areas. The hike covers about 7 km and could take nearly 4 hours, depending on your pace and ability.

1-Day Tour: Sipi Falls Hike is a full-day trip to Sipi Falls, which lie on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park, near the Kenyan border. Sipi Falls is a series of three tall waterfalls all plunging along the lower slopes of Mt Elgon in Eastern Uganda.
The area around Sipi offers breathtaking views in a cool, fresh environment, with fresh air coming down from Mount Elgon. The Sipi Falls area also offers most of the Mt. Elgon climbing and hiking starting points, with the most popular route, Budadiri, following the Sasa Trail to the summit and descending to the Sipi Falls trail.
The main waterfall is approximately 100 meters high and visible from multiple locations. The next falls, which are upstream, are said to be 75m tall. This one features several upper cascades before plunging. You can walk to a tiny cave right behind this waterfall. The uppermost waterfall is 85m tall. It’s a long way from the 2nd fall to this one.
Other adventure activities around Sipi Waterfalls include Sipi rock climbing in the Mountain Elgon region, Nature walks, birding, and mountain biking. There are also cultural visits to the Bagisu people in the region, who are mainly farmers and produce Arabic Coffee, the region’s main cash crop.

0600 Hours: Enjoy an early breakfast followed by a pickup from your hotel or residence for the start of the Kampala 1 Day Tour, Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon Hike. Sipi Falls is located in the Kapchorwa district, about 235 km away. Our driver-guide will give you a briefing on the day’s events as you drive along.
The drive into Sipi Falls is stunning, with views of the Karamoja plains, Lake Kyoga, and the slopes of Mount Elgon. You will pass through Jinja, Iganga, and Mbale en route to the Sipi region in Kapchorwa District. En route, expect to see the Mabira rainforest, the vast sugarcane and tea plantations of Lugazi, and the mighty Nile in Jinja.
The journey is likely to take you approximately 5 hours.
1030 Hours: Upon arrival and after a brief relaxation, you get a local guide to lead the hike, starting with the top‐most waterfall, and descending down to the bottom waterfall, which is also the main Sipi Waterfall. The waterfalls measure 85 meters, 75 meters, and 100 meters respectively.
The trek follows a well-maintained trail network through pleasant countryside, offering panoramic views in all directions. There are some steep sections that may require some muscle to climb, and it becomes even more challenging on a rainy day due to the mud and slippery conditions.
The hike covers about 7 kilometers and could take nearly 4 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level. Alternatively, you can choose to skip one of the waterfalls if the fatigue becomes unbearable. All this walking takes you through the community, offering great views of the surrounding hilly farming areas.
1430 Hours: Enjoy your picnic lunch at the bottom of the falls or at one of the accommodations overlooking the main waterfalls (Sipi River lodge, Lacam Lodge, or Moses Camp)
1530 Hours: Return to the lodge, then drive back to Kampala, arriving late evening, depending on the traffic (latest 2030 Hours).
