Mara
Plains Camp; Mara Plains Camp is set right
in the heart of some of the greatest predator country
in Kenya. Mara Plains Camp is located on the northern
border of the Masai Mara Game Reserve in the Olare Orok
Conservancy.
Rarely
a night passes without lion roaring nearby, while leopard
are regularly found to wander through the camp and cheetah
have established territories on the savannah off the
main area.
Mara
Plains Camp is a small, high quality, seven-roomed camp
under canvas and on raised decks with sweeping views
across Kenya’s notable savannahs. It is among
the smallest and most personal camps in the Mara region.
As
one of just three camps currently operating within the
Conservancy, which boasts the region’s lowest
vehicle density, no mini-buses and only one guest room
per 700 acres.
It
is possible to avoid the high tourist density of the
Masai Mara Game Reserve proper, if desired. No other
camp in the greater Masai Mara Game Reserve or Olare
Orok Conservancy has the privilege of traversing opportunities
of Mara Plains Camp. Guests are able to traverse three
areas as part of their stay at Mara Plains:

Mara
Plains Camp is located in private and secure
forty five thousand acres piece of land on the route
of Kenya’s annual wildebeest migration. This area
is a vital dry season resource area for diversity of
wildlife and as such promises great game viewing throughout
the year.
Tucked
away in a grove of natural forest, the camp is set on
the bends of the Ntiakitiak River that cuts through
the Olare Orok Conservancy. This is an exclusive Masai
owned conservation area on the northern boundary of
the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Mara
Plains Camp host is Sean Hartley, an experience Kenyan
experienced guide and established photographer. This
digital enthusiast is always at hand to help you with
tips to wildlife photography where ever he can.
Mara
Plains offers possibly the widest range of activities
anywhere in the greater Masai Mara - game drives, quality
night drives, nature walks with armed guides, balloon
safaris (at extra cost), local village visits (authentic)
and unrivalled access to superior wildlife habitat.
Hot
Air Ballooning
Hot
Air Ballooning over the Masai Mara is excluded from
the nightly accommodation prices. It is recommended
that guests book this in advance with African Spice
Safaris.
Guests
who wish to balloon should book with Adventures Aloft
as this is the company that launches closest to Mara
Plains Camp. Adventures Aloft offers a free transfer
to their launch site from Mara Plains.
Should
guests book their ballooning with Musiara (Little Governor’s)
or any other ballooning company, please note that it
is at least a two hour drive to their launch site and
that there is a transfer fee of 75 US Dollars per person
return (Minimum two Guests ) due to the distance involved.

Plains Camp Accommodation
The
camp features an eco-friendly in design, management
style and amenities. Accommodation is provided in six
double sharing or single use tents all on raised platforms
snuggly set in the trees along the banks of the Ntiakitiak
River.
Each
tent has its own private views over the river and the
surrounding wildlife plains. All have lockable trunks,
en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets.
Lighting is on a 24 hour electricity supply supported
by the camp’s generator.
Meals
are prepared by professional with special dietary
requirements catered for with prior arrangements.
House wines, beers and soft drinks are on the house.
The camp also has a large dining tent as well as a
lounge tent where guests can relax and share their
safari experiences.
Safari
Activities at Mara Plains Camp Masai Mara
Mara Plains Camp keeps the experience intimate and personal,
so there are no set camp schedule or meal times. Plans
are tailored around the whims of the day, and as the
wildlife dictates.
Guests
have the opportunity to visit a local Masai village
(or "Enkang" in Maa) to learn more about the
traditions and culture of the surrounding community.
Hot air balloon safaris are available, and must be booked
in advance (at extra cost).
This
is a very early morning activity, giving stunning views
of the sunrise, the landscape and a sense of the sheer
size of the Masai Mara region.
Activities
around the camp include Day and Night Game Drives in
4x4 vehicles, which are equipped to accommodate four
to five keen photographers. Game and bird walks with
the escort of armed and expert guides, Bush meals, Sundowners
and Cultural Bush walks.
At
a little supplementary cost you can experience an early
morning balloon safari (a truly breath-taking experience),
or take a short excursion flight to the Lake Victoria
for a Day Fishing Trip.
A
gallery tent with digital still photography, video footage
editing facilities and a large HD compatible preview
screen which enables guests to show off their experiences
and trophies of the day.

There are four ways
to get to Mara Plains Camp:

By road
Transfers from Ol
Kiombo or Olare Orok Conservancy airstrips are included
in the rate. It is approximately a 20-minute transfer
(but could be longer, depending on wildlife sightings).
The
camp is open all year round and is accessible by daily
scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson airport
to the Ol Kiombo airstrip approximately 30 minutes
drive from the camp.
Private
air charters can land on the Conservancy’s private
airstrip approximately 15 minutes drive from camp.
