Kampala Day Tour Mabira Forest Reserve Nature Walk Trip

This is an exciting tour of Uganda’s Mabira forest reserve for a nature walk. The Mabira Forest Reserve is located approximately 56 kilometers East of Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on the main Kampala-Jinja highway in the Buikwe District. Mabira Forest is a tropical rainforest covering approximately 300 square miles.

This natural Habitat forest boasts more than 312 tree species and is home to 315 bird species, including the Nahan’s Francolin and the Cassin Hawk-Eagle. Mabira Forest can be discovered via an extensive trail.

For the vigorous, there is an approximately 25-kilometer bike trail that links the forest to nearby sugar and tea plantations. Several activities are available in the forest, including forest/nature walks, birding, cycle trails, mountain biking, and relaxing with a picnic lunch at the forest centre.

0800 Hours: After an early breakfast, we pick you up from your hotel/ residence and drive you to Mabira Forest. The forest is located on the main Kampala-Jinja Highway, 54 km from Kampala and about 26 km from Jinja Town.

You will take Jinja Road, which offers beautiful scenery along the way, featuring undulating hills covered with lush green vegetation, sugarcane, and tea plantations. The journey takes approximately 1 hour, and given its location, the nature walks have become very popular with weekend visitors from both Kampala and Jinja.

0900 Hours: We arrive at the forest center on the edge of Najjembe village, approximately 500 meters north of the main road. We set out on a nature walk with the centre’s forest guide.

Spectacular birds: The forest has well-established trails and is home to over 315 bird species, including the Nahan’s Francolin, Cassin Hawk Eagle, Forest Wood Hoope, purple-throated cuckoo, tit Hylia, red-headed blue bill, and many more. Some of these species are found only in the Mabira Forest. It is truly an awesome experience for nature lovers.

Forest trees: a collection of species such as Cordia Millenii, Melilla Exclesa, and Warbhugia Ugandensis is prominent for treating various infections, i.e., medicinal plants.

Animal Species: Mabira Forest has 9 endangered mammal species found nowhere else in Uganda, including the short-tailed fruit bat, Mangabey, baboon, colobus monkeys, butterflies, and several birds.

1230 hours: Lunch break at a cool picnic site.

1400 Hours: After lunch, continue with the nature walk and also visit Griffin Falls. This is a small fall in the middle of the forest, resulting in small water streams that peruse through the forest. Other attractions include butterflies (up to 218 species) and moths (97 species).

1600 Hours: Return to Kampala.
