Mabira Forest Reserve Nature Walk Day Trip From Kampala is an exciting tour to Uganda's Mabira forest reserve for a nature walk. This forest is the largest semi-deciduous forest remaining in the central region of Uganda and an important Bird area with over 300 species including the endangered Nahan’s Francolin.

After an breakfast, drive to Mabira Forest located on the main Kampala-Jinja Highway, 54 kilometers from the City of Kampala and about 26 kilometers from Jinja Town. The forest center is on the edge of Najjembe village approximately 500 meters north of the main road. A short walk or drive down this marrum road leads you to the forest center.

You will take Jinja road offering en-route beautiful scenery featuring undulating hills covered with lush green vegetation, sugarcane and tea plantations. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and by virtue of it's location the nature walk has become very popular for weekend visitors from both Kampala and Jinja.

The forest has well established trails and is also home to over 315 species of Bird like the Nahan's Francolin, cassin Hawk Eagle, the forest wood hoope, the purple throated cuckoo, the tit hylia, the red headed blue bill, the black bellied seed cracker, the shinning blue king fisher and many more.

Some of these species can only be found in Mabira forest and nowhere else. It is truly an awesome experience for nature lovers.

Lunch break and continue birding in the evening. The forest also hosts a wide range of animals, including endangered primates. One primatologist recently confirmed the discovery of a new Primates Species very close to the Grey-checked Mangabey in this forest!

Other unique features to be explored in the forest Reserve include 218 butterfly species, 97 moths species,23 small mammal species especially primate species of Monkey clan and the spectacular Griffin falls.
