Kampala 1 Day Tour Lake Mburo National Park

1-Day Lake Mburo National Park is a wildlife day trip to the park, located only 3 hours from Kampala by road. Lake Mburo is one of Uganda’s smaller national parks, but it is well worth a visit, with a mix of lakes and plains and excellent birdwatching.

Game drives, walks, and boat trips are available here, and it is within easy reach of Kampala and ideally situated for a stopover between the capital and the gorilla parks to the west. The park covers approximately 260 km² and features a diverse mix of habitats and scenery, including rolling grasslands, hills, and acacia forest.

There are five main lakes, the largest of which is Lake Mburo, located within the park boundaries. Many plains animals are found here, including zebra, buffalo, topi, eland, bush pigs, and hippos in the waterways. Lake Mburo National Park’s wetland areas support a wide variety of birdlife, with over 350 species. Of the many antelope species that thrive here, the sitatunga are more unusual and found around the swampy areas.

Predators here include leopards, jackals, hyenas, and smaller mongoose species, which are active after dark. Lions were hunted to extinction in the 70s and their current status in the area is unknown. Vervet monkeys and baboons are common here. There is a tented camp near the lake within the park and an eco-lodge just outside the park.

Lake Mburo National Park offers the Equator for photos, a ‘polar-water experiment’, a game drive, a boat trip on Lake Mburo, and a visit to a local craft village (Mpabire Village).
