Kiambethu
Tea Farm Cottages
are about an hour's drive away from the hustle and
bustle from Nairobi and as such makes a welcome
day or overnight tour.
Kiambethu
Tea Farm Homestay is situated at 7200 feet
in a truly magnificent garden with views of the
spectacular Mount Kilimanjaro and the Ngong hills.
Kiambethu is a farmhouse to four generations of
the first family to plant and make tea in Kenya.
Kiambethu
Tea Farm Fiona
welcome you with some homemade biscuits (yum!) and
of course tea, before regaling tales of the farm and
the tea making process. This particular farm is one
of the founding ones in Kenya and kicked off the million
dollar industry today.
The
gardens around the home are lovely and well worth
a stroll, especially to catch glimpses of the resident
colobus monkeys! Also included in the tour is a walk
through the indigenous forest that is still preserved
(most was cleared for the tea farms).
The
guide is highly entertaining and comical! Your stay
here includes a relaxed lunch. Again most of the produce
is locally sourced and when making reservations through
African Spice Safaris inform them of any dietary requirements!
Lunch is a 3 course affair with complementary beverages
- wine, beers, sherry, soft drinks and of course teas
and coffee!
Kiambethu's
lunch is a great meal with homemade butter, rolls,
and soup. Then salad, maize (white corn) and cheese,
potatoes, green beans, carrots, Swiss steak, followed
by fruit and homemade ice cream. The veggie options
served is fantastic. At Kiambethu Tea Farm, guests
are given an insight into the tea making process followed
by an opportunity to see tea in the field.
Accompanied
by the resident Kenyan guide, guests can also take
a short walk into the small indigenous forest and
learn about the plants and how they were used traditionally,
watch the Colobus monkeys and birds that are resident
in the gardens or just enjoy the sweeping views across
the tea fields to the Ngong Hills.
When
in the area, be sure to also check out Tigoni waterfalls!
A definite activity worth doing when in Nairobi! In
case you would like a Homestay, you could stay in
the house and enjoy meals together with Fiona –
request for reservations through Africa Spice Safaris.
