Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp is situated in Tsavo West National Park and is accessible from the Mtito Andei Gate, located on the main Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The camp is about 4 hours (235 km) by road from Nairobi.

The camp is 65 km (1 ½ hours) from Mtito Andei Gate, via Kilaguni, Kitani, to Finch Hattons, and 260 km from Mombasa to Mtito Andei (approximately 4 hours).

Finch Hattons is easily accessible by charter flight or private aircraft. The camp is approximately an hour by air from Nairobi, accessible via a Charter flight from Wilson Airport. Finch Hatton’s Camp has a private all-weather airstrip, approximately 3.5 Kilometers from the Lodge.

The camp lies at the heart of Tsavo West National Park, part of Kenya’s largest single game park. Finch Hattons’ 35-acre concession sits on the southwestern edge of Tsavo West.

The camp offers day and night game drives, bush walks, crater climbs, and rainforest hikes as well as day trips to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, Mzima Springs, Chyulu Hills, Amboseli National Park, and Lake Jipe. You might also choose to climb to the top of Oldoinyo Ololarami volcano, which offers stunning 360-degree views of Tsavo National Park.

How to Get There

By Road:

• From Nairobi: Approx. 4.5–5.5 hours via Mombasa Highway (Mtito Andei Gate)

• From Mombasa: Approx. 5–6 hours via Voi and Tsavo River Gate

By Air:

• The camp has a private airstrip (Finch Hattons Airstrip) just 3 km away, suitable for charter flights and scheduled light aircraft.

• Flights from Nairobi (Wilson Airport), Diani, or Mombasa take about 1 hour.

By Rail:

• Take the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) to Mtito Andei Station. The road transfer to the camp takes about 45 minutes.

Accommodation

Finch Hattons offers 17 opulent tented suites, each with panoramic glass walls, handcrafted furnishings, and complete privacy in the bush. The 17 spacious Safari Tents are incredible – each features a chandelier over the bed, an indoor shower, and two outdoor showers, allowing you to shower under the stars. Additionally, a large patio deck provides a perfect spot to watch the wildlife from your tent.

The entire camp is situated around a pond and lacks a fence. This means that you can see crocodiles, monkeys, and birds from the hotel restaurant and your room. These pools are home to a resident pod of hippopotamus that spends their days wallowing in the shallows and their nights grazing around the camp.

Crocodiles and a healthy population of terrapins and monitor lizards are often seen sunning themselves at the water’s edge. At the same time, a wide variety of games have been sighted in and around. Birdlife at Finch Hatton’s Camp is spectacular, with over 200 locally recorded species.

Yellow-barked Acacia Xanthophlea trees surround the tents, which are beautifully located and offer comfortable and stylish accommodation in an idyllic setting. Many boast spectacular views directly overlooking the hippo pools and springs.

Denys Finch Hatton was one of Kenya’s great adventurers. He devoted his life to exploring the wild in style. In his camp, dinner was served on fine china with silver and crystal, while the gentle strains of Mozart played in the background. Here, in Tsavo, where he lived and died, this tradition endures.
