Budongo Forest Reserve Chimpanzee Trekking Day Trip from Kampala takes you to Budongo Forest situated approximately 3 hours away by road northwest of the capital city Kampala, Uganda on the way to the prominent Murchison Falls National Park.

The major tourist sites within this forest are: the Kaniyo Pabidi Eco tourism site, Busingiro Eco tourism site and Kaniyo Pabidi Eco tourism site which are located at boundaries to Murchison Falls National Park and dominated by Mahogany and Iron-wood trees.

Budongo Forest has a Chimpanzee community of 600-700 in the forest area. You track a group of 40-50 individuals in the Kanyo Pabidi group.

These chimps are the newest to be habituated but good sightings are happening. This community is known as the southern community and consists of around 50 individuals.

Budongo has a high bio diversity with 24 species of small mammals, nine being primates, 359 species of birds and 289 species of butterfly. The terrain is flatter than other sites allowing for good traveling and good canopy visibility.

Two chimpanzee walks are available each day one at 0800 Hours and the other at 1400 Hours. Both walks go for around 3 Hours with a group size of 6 guests. Budongo forest also offers a full day chimp habituation experience this is generally with a group of four including two researches.

Depart Kampala at 0600 Hours for a 4 hour drive north to Budongo Forest. Drive through the Ugandan countryside which alone is worth the trip toward Masindi. There is lots to see and many fabulous picture opportunities. You will be in a comfortable vehicle, English speaking driver, bottled water for your comfort.

Arrive at Kaniyo Pabidi at Budongo Forest and lunch follows. After lunch begin your Chimpanzee tracking in this original Mahogany Forest. You will be tracking habituated chimpanzees which means that they are used to humans. This is a process that takes several years. They are not tame, but simply used to having humans near them and near them you come and see them up close.

After tracking return to Kampala to arrive at 1900 Hours. Its .a full day tour, but well worth it and a most rewarding experience. Your best one day Chimpanzee tracking experience while in Uganda.

Leave Kampala at 0600 Hours for a 4 Hour drive north to Budongo Forest. The drive through the Ugandan country-side alone is worth the trip all the way to Masindi. You will be in a comfortable vehicle and in the company of a professional English speaking Safari driver guide. Bottle water will be provided during the safari.

Arrive at Kaniyo Pabidi at Budongo Forest Reserve and lunch follows. Early afternoon you will start the Chimpanzee tracking through the Mahogany Forest. Tracking habituated chimpanzees means that the chimps are used to human beings getting close to them. This is a process that takes several years. They are not tame, but simply used to having humans near them.

The guides follow the daily movements of the habituated chimpanzee groups. Three years of recording their movements indicate July, August and September offer a 90% success rate of seeing the chimps.

In February, March, April, May and September this decreases to 70%, and in October, November, December and January when food is rarely available the chances drop to 50%. The fluctuating fruiting seasons of the forest trees determine the chimp’s movements.

Each day, chimpanzees like gorillas move to a new location for the night building new nests. Budongo Forest is a project of both Jane Goodall Institute and Uganda Wildlife Authority.
