Post Hotel is just off Thika road about 40
kilometers from Nairobi. Blue Post Hotel, lies on a
promontory where the Chania and Thika rivers meet to
form the Thika and Chania Falls. Nestled between two
falls –Chania and Thika; the hotel was started
in 1908; as a stopover for white settlers who lived
and farmed in central Kenya.
The
hotel was initially owned by a white man named Cape,
who later sold it to a Mr. Edward Sergent, until 1976
when it changed hands to the Kenyatta family. Before
the present hotel, which has an African touch with Makuti
roofing was built; the residence bar comprised of shades
with blue pillars; and that’s where it derived
its name from.
Blue Post Hotel, is located between two rivers, the
Chania and Thika, with their sources in the Aberdare
Ranges. Natural waterfalls are a feature of both rivers.
For Nature lovers, Blue Post is home to a variety of
bird life as well as to a number of indigenous trees
found only in this area.
Accommodation
consists of 32 spacious rooms with GTV and DSTV-connected
TV, located in two wings, the Chania Wing and Thika
Wing. As a conference venue, the hotel can accommodate
four seminars at a time, with seating for 20, 40, 60
and over 300 people.
Other
facilities include cyber cafe, gift shop, children's
park, wedding tents, chairs and tables for hire, craft
centre, salon, disco and weekend entertainment (other
days on request) plus rafting, horse-riding and nature
walks.

Hotel Museum
Kenya’s
only hotel between two falls, Blue Posts Hotel, now
has a museum, adding to the animal park to form a study
centre for kids wishing to learn more about various
animals and about Kenya without having to travel far.
Started
less than a year ago, the museum mostly showcases animal
life, with exhibits such as skulls of various animals
including the hippo, zebra and buffalo, a collection
of various animals’ dropping such the crocodile’s,
which resembles sausages, leopard’s, hippo’s
and the tortoise’s.
Blue
Posts Hotel Museum also has an aquarium with gold fish,
and various marine animals including, a lobster, the
only creature with blue blood, crabs, yellow box fish,
porcupine fish, sword fish, Pinkhandle barracuda-a type
of fish that feeds on medium fish and squid, the skull
of a shark, as well as coral reefs, shells, and various
types of rocks.

the Chania falls, and the view, the beautiful flowers
and trees gives one a feeling of refreshing tranquility.

are also eggs of various animals including the crocodile’s
and the ostrich eggs An ostrich’s egg is equivalent
to 24 chicken eggs and a person of average weight can
actually step on it without breaking it. The only animal
known to break an ostrich’s egg is the Egyptian
Vulture, which takes the egg up a high place and drops
it until it breaks then it feeds on the yolk.
Also
on exhibit at the Blue Posts Hotel Museum are East African
currencies both coins and notes that are no longer in
use; as well as a collection of various African calabashes.
The animal park, started some three years ago, has some
of the rarest animals including a porcupine, which is
the largest rodent in Africa. The rodent has spikes
and wags its tail producing a rattling sound; and is
rarely seen during the day as it is nocturnal.
The
park also has Nile crocodiles, 4 adults and over ten
young ones as well as terrapins and tortoises. The park
has three of the tortoises’ species including
the leopard tortoises, the pancake tortoises and the
bell hinged back tortoises.
The pancake tortoise is flat-shelled, resembling the
shape of a pancake and smaller than the other two; while
the leopard tortoise is the largest of the three species.
Other animals at the park include the psyches monkeys,
pigeons, guinea fowls, turkeys, bush baby and rabbits.

Blue
Posts Hotel has a nature trail along the River Bank
gives one a chance to enjoy nature’s richness;
as the hotel is home to over sixty species of birds
including some exotic birds such as the Grey kites,
Yellow Vented Bulbul and a variety of doves and sparrows.
The
places is also home to several indigenous trees only
found here, with the trail extending to the point where
the two rivers -Chania and Thika meet, and if the water
level is low, one can actually step on the stones in
the river and enjoy some coolness of the waters.
Other
facilities for kids at Blue Posts Hotel include
the children’s park with swings, an electric merry-go
round, a dry slide and sea saw; but perhaps the highlight
is the long meandering 9 feet deep pond; where the kids
and parents as well enjoy boat rafting; with some shades
on the island where some can sit and watch as the kids
enjoy the rides.
