2 Days/ 1 Night Budongo Forest Reserve Chimpanzee expedition offers a unique opportunity to meet our closest relatives in their natural habitat. About 700 chimpanzees live in the Budongo Forest Reserve, the largest remaining tropical rainforest in East Africa.

In addition, there are four other major primate species in the Budongo Forest. You’ll team up with field assistants at the Budongo Conservation Field Station to observe chimps and other primates as they forage for food in the morning and late afternoon.

The Budongo Forest is home to many fruiting trees and several species of primate that depend upon tree fruit as a major component of their diets. Budongo Forest is ranked among the top five tourist destinations in Uganda. It is a hot spot for species diversity.

The forest contains the Royal Mile, named for its popularity as a traditional stopover for Uganda's royalty. The Royal Mile is a superb birding spot, with many West and Central African species in addition to the local East African species. The forest is home to the largest chimpanzee population in Uganda.

Chimpanzee Tracking (Kaniyo Pabidi only). The walk is generally lasts between 2 to 4 hours in the forest. Maximum of 2 groups of 4-6 people per morning and afternoon will be allowed to track chimpanzees with our experienced guides. The tracking will include one hour with the wild community of chimpanzees that we have habituated.

This community is known as the southern community and consists of around 45-50 individuals. The walk will include viewing of other wildlife in the forest and also seeing the oldest mahogany trees in East Africa. Other diurnal primates that may be seen during this walk are black and white colobus, red tail monkeys, blue monkeys and olive baboons.

Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

Budongo Forest Reserve Chimpanzee Tracking experience is the number one priority here. Starting in October up to January, the time when the fruits are shorter in supply, the chimps move a lot covering a wider area.

Among the various bird species that have been recorded in Budongo Forest Reserve are more than 360 species that will certainly reward you with a very amazing birding safari experience in this great forest in Uganda.

In addition there are 290 butterflies species, 130 Moths species, 465 tree species, as well as 24 mammals nine of which are actually primates.

We depart Kampala after breakfast at 0700 Hours and drive to Budongo Forest Reserve to arrive at 1100 Hours. Our accommodations will be at the Budongo Eco Lodge where you check in and take the dormitory or self contained rooms for the day.

Budongo Forest is an oasis of tranquility where one can truly feel at one with nature. The forest reserve has the oldest Mahogany Tree Forest in East Africa.

Budongo Forest will seem like an oasis to you, the quiet being broken by the sounds of birds, primates nearby - very different from a forest in North America or Europe. Certainly a place to come and spend a couple of days in peace with creation.

After lunch at the Budongo Eco Lodge enjoy a guided forest walk and discover the beauty of this awesome place yourself. You can choose to take a guided Forest Walk for 1.5 hours or a 3 to 4 hours guided birding Adventure.

Breakfast at the lodge then followed by Chimpanzee Tracking for 3 to 4 Hours in a small group experience. You will visit some of the habituated Chimpanzees spending an hour with them and observing them.

Each day, chimpanzees like gorillas move to new locations for the night building fresh nests for the day. Budongo Forest is a project of both the Jane Goodall Institute and Uganda Wildlife Authority. Enjoy your time with the chimpanzees.
