Mount Kenya Climb 1 Day Hike  – Climb the highest mountain in Kenya located inside Mount Kenya National Park. Mount Kenya is second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. Mount Kenya straddles the equator about 193 km North-East of Nairobi and can be reached by road through Embu/Meru road to Chogoria town, Nanyuki-Isiolo road via Sirimon Track or Nyeri-Nanyuki road near Naro Moru. Mount Kenya can also be accessed by air through Nanyuki Airport – the closest commercial airstrip. The drive from Nairobi to Mt. Kenya is approximately 3½ hours. Enjoy a full-day hiking trip from Nairobi to Mt Kenya using one of the 3 routes – Naro Moru to the West, Sirimon on the North West, and Chogoria on the South East.

Take the closest route from Nairobi – Naro Moru route (6 hours) up to the Meteorological Station and back, catching sight of animals and birds and marveling at the scenic beauty around you. The tour departs Nairobi at 0600 Hours to arrive at the Mt Kenya National Park Naro Moru Gate at 0900 Hours. Begin the hike in the company of your guide trekking across the rainforest zone of Mount Kenya. You will get a chance to spot some animals such as antelopes, black-and-white colobus monkeys, hyraxes, and buffalos among others. Enjoy views of the towering Batian, Nelion, and Lenana peaks from the slopes of Mt Kenya. Birdlife is plentiful such as ducks, grouse, pigeons and doves, turacos, herons, egrets, and bee-eaters.

At around 1200 hours, shortly after reaching the Meteorological Station, you will return to the Naro Moru gate traversing the bamboo forest on your way down, reaching the gate at around 2 pm in the afternoon. It is here at the gate that you will enjoy your packed lunch then finally head back to Nairobi town, a short journey that takes approximately a three-hour drive.

Mount Kenya Climb 1 Day Hike Naro Moru Route

0600 Hours: Our Mount Kenya Climb 1 Day hike Naro Moru route departs from your hotel/ residence in Nairobi for Naru Moru Gate (Mount Kenya). We arrive at the Naru Moru Park Gate of Mount Kenya national park. Here you will have photo opportunities of some wildlife such as bushbuck, waterbuck, baboons, and birdlife.

Continue driving to the Met. The station camp is located at an altitude of 3,000 meters. At the camp, there are a lot of different types of vegetation and the guides will explain more about it.

1000 Hours: Take your packed lunch and start a leisurely pace trekking up the mountain. You will walk through different vegetation from bamboo forest, hagenia trees to heathers trees and the beginning of a moorland covered by tussock grass and flowered cabbage roberias, also great views of lowland and Aberdare ranges.

Along the way, you will enjoy the enriched forest of birdlife and flowers at high altitudes. After 3 to 4 hours of ascending you will be on top of Teleki Valley where we have picnic rocks which will be our lunch spot (3,700 meters).

1300 Hours: Enjoy your lunch with great views. After lunch, continue hiking to the crest of the ridge at 4,000 meters to a vantage point from where you have splendid views of the main peaks of Mount Kenya as well as the Teleki Valley.

You will then descend down to Met. Station (2 to 3 hours) where we will find our transport waiting to take you back to the lodge for a hot shower and a well-earned rest.

(If you are returning to Nairobi, you will be back at around 1900 hours on the same day).

There are 5 main Routes to Mt Kenya Peak

Sirimon: Sirimon route, is the most popular ascent as the altitude gain is nice and steady and it offers one of the most beautiful approaches to the peaks. Allow a minimum of 2 nights to peak when ascending, although we recommend spending an extra night at the last camp (Shipton’s) on the way up.

Burguret: If you want to avoid crowds then Burguret is the best route. You’ll be hacking through pristine rainforest on this little-used route, overnighting at wilderness campsites.  Going up this route is challenging, it is little more than a game track in places, often muddy and rough underfoot.

Burguret is usually combined with a Chogoria or Sirimon descent. Allow a minimum of 3 nights before peak when ascending

Naro Moru: Naro-Moru is the most popular descent route, fast and easy (at least on the way down!). Naro Moru passes through the notorious vertical bog section which gets very waterlogged in the rainy seasons.  The vegetation is at its most striking on this route. It can be descended in one very long day, usually done in two days and one night.

Chogoria: If you have more time then choose dramatic Chogoria over Naro Moru for the descent. The Chogoria route passes by tarns, waterfalls, and an incredible gorge.  Allow two or three days for your descent.

Timau: Timau is little used nowadays, there is a little forest on this side of the mountain and no facilities, just lots of wide-open country. Mount Kenya Climb One Day hike is for visitors who would be spending the night before in lodges, hotels, and hostels in the Mount Kenya region or from Nairobi. The trip offers a drive to the park entrance and a hike to view plants, animals, and scenery.
