Day 1: Mombasa to Amboseli (Long Drive Day)

0600 Hours – 0700 Hours: Early pickup from your Mombasa/Diani hotel to start the long, scenic drive towards Amboseli
1230 Hours – 1330 Hours: Arrive at the camp or lodge, check in, and have lunch
1530 Hours – 1630 Hours: Afternoon game drive, offering the first opportunity to see large elephant herds with Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop
1900 Hours: Dinner and overnight stay

Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

0630 Hours: Early morning game drive to catch predators while they are active and enjoy the best views of Mt. Kilimanjaro

This is a fantastic 3-day road safari from Mombasa to Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, one of Africa’s best game viewing destinations! The safari begins and ends in Mombasa. Amboseli National Park is located 400 km from Mombasa, and the driving time is 6 hours.

Second in popularity after the legendary Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park not only offers great game viewing but is also the place to go for the best views of iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. The best time to view Kilimanjaro is at dawn and sunset when the clouds lift, and the light is clear and soft.

Amboseli is an area of low scrubby vegetation and open grassy plains, all of which make for easy game viewing. Accommodation is available at several camps and safari lodges, and you’ll explore the park on game drives.

Other available activities include bird watching, sundowners, Maasai cultural tours, guided nature walks, bush breakfasts, and dinners.

At only 392km² (150 miles²) Amboseli is a small park and the range of animals is not as extensive as that of other parks in Kenya but streams from Kilimanjaro surface in the centre of Amboseli, creating wetlands that support a rich diversity of wildlife and most of the classic big mammals are there.

The species list includes lions, over 900 elephants, monkeys, zebras, buffalo, leopards, spotted hyenas, giraffes, and cheetahs, and bird watchers will be happy with a list that tops 300 species.

Day 1: Mombasa – Drive to Amboseli National Park

0500 Hours: After breakfast at the hotel in Mombasa, we depart by road and drive along the Mombasa/Nairobi highway into the bush country of Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli is home to the legendary Masai tribesmen and is famous for huge herds of elephants.

1200 Hours: Upon arrival at our lodge, we check in and have lunch. Later, we have some time to relax, swim, and enjoy the camp and lodge grounds.

1530 Hours: We have our afternoon tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate before setting out on the afternoon game drive. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months.

Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, including the African elephant, buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest.

There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting.

1830 Hours: Return to the camp/ lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

0630 Hours: Rising early for good views of Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds build up over the summit, we set off for another stimulating game drive. Amboseli is an excellent place to view a multitude of wildlife, including African elephants, buffalo, impala, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest, among other African animals.

0900 Hours: We return to our lodge/ camp for breakfast. The rest of the morning is at leisure, or you may opt to use this time to visit a Masai village and learn more about the Masai culture and customs.

1000 Hours: You will learn how the Masai huts are made from dung, how they start a fire, how to milk a goat, and enjoy their traditional dances where they jump and sing. Later you may visit the Masai market where they sell crafts. All this with Mount Kilimanjaro in the backdrop.

1200 Hours: Midday finds us at our lodge/camp for lunch and an afternoon rest, followed by another extensive game drive at 1530 Hours.

1830 Hours: We return to camp for evening cocktails at the bar, followed by dinner.
