These orphanages provide not only a home and education to so many desperately needy children who otherwise may not even survive, but it gives them a family, provides love and support, teaches morals and manners, and shows these children who have had the hardest of starts in life what it feels like to be loved. What seems like the smallest of contributions can sometimes make the biggest of differences.

Mombasa’s North Coast Orphanages include Wa Salama, Mikoroshoni School, Lioness Cubs Home, Kikambala Children’s Home/ Nursery School,  Good Life Orphanage, and the Feeding Station, Kikambla.  Mombasa South Coast Orphanages include Shikamana School, Hermann Nursery & Primary School, Tumaini Timbwani School in Likoni, and Little Angels Academy.

While visiting these children’s homes one could donate money or bring foodstuff such as maize flour, wheat flour, cooking oil, spread, bread, etc. Fruit and vegetables are cheap and plentiful and very much appreciated. You could also buy for the orphanage toiletries, disinfectant, cleaning items, washing up powder, and sanitary items for the girls. Schools need books, exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, geometry sets, footballs, and game equipment.

Having lived tragic lives without love and affection the main thing most of these children need is some care and attention. Your 1-day tour to one of these centers will be deeply fulfilling.

Many orphanages and children’s centers open their doors to other impoverished children during the daytime by providing feeding programs or a community school to benefit both the children living there and the wider community.

Depending on the time you have at hand you may help in the day-to-day care of the orphans, running the orphanage, helping with feeding and food preparation, etc. You could also join in playtime, arranging extra-curricular activities, sports, arts and crafts, entertainment and generally bringing fun and affection to the lives of these vulnerable and deprived kids.
