Lamu Island Day Tour - Kiwayu Boat Safari

Lamu Island Day Tour Kiwayu Boat Safari is a full day trip from Lamu Island to Kiwayu Island located only about about 2 hours one way by boat. Our Lamu Island day tour to Kiwayu by boat includes a picnic lunch. Fishing can also be organized on the way to Kiwayu. Kiwayu Island is a small island in the eastern part of the Lamu Archipelago, situated in the Kiunga Marine National Reserve.

Kiwayuu Island (alternate spelling Kiwayu) gained a reputation as a retreat for the rich and famous. It boasts an idyllic beach, fabulous snorkeling on the coral reefs and peace and quiet. On the mainland across from the island is the Kiwayu Safari Lodge which is considered to be one of the world’s top hotels. On the island is the more modestly priced Munira Safari Lodge.

Aside from beaches and water sports, our day tour could include (upon request) game viewing safaris to Boni and Dodori game reserves. The animals that inhabit these reserves are often migratory such as elephant and buffalo. The permanent residents are lion, cheetah, serval, caracal, lesser kudu, monkeys and rare African hunting dog.

Kiunga Marine National Reserve is home to many types of marine life like coral fish, dugongs, whale shark, basking whale, tuna, marlin, sailfish, Wahoo, kingfish and many other sports fish species. Dolphins and whales are seen regularly off the coast of Kiwayu, moving in shoals across the ocean.

What to Do and See on your Day Tour to Kiwayu Island from Lamu

Kiwayu Beach: The beach side offers 7 miles of untouched beach. Step off the beach and enjoy some of the best snorkeling, take a walk and collect shells, discover caves along the rock pools and cliffs.

Other beach activities include: sand yachts, kite boarding, body board surfing and beach kites.

Kiwayu Creek Side: The creeks offer fantastic bird watching on offer viewed from kayaks or dhows. Watch monkeys play on the shoreline or snorkel in different coral gardens.

Learn to water-ski in glassy waters or swim off the jetty in the crystal clear calm water. Other creek activities include laser sailing, doughnutting, banana boating and wake-boarding.

Kiwayu Swahili culture: Take in some Kiwayu culture the Swahili way by spending a morning in the local villages Chandani, and Kiwayu. The beauty of the island is that you can walk anywhere hassle free.

All villagers are more than happy to welcome you in and show you how they live and maybe teach you some local crafts.

Spend an hour or two fishing on local dhows, walk the mangroves and learn the traditional way of hunting mangrove crabs, discover some of our many hidden ancient ruins, find some treasure!

Kiwayu Wildlife Game Drives: The wild side offers you a vast expanse of wilderness packed with mammals, fish and birds.

Visit Kiunga marine reserve with the Dadori and Boni on the mainland.  Game drives on the mainland offer a chance to see cheetah, leopard, buffalo, antelope, hippo, vervet monkeys and hyena.

Kiwayu Diving: Diving is fantastic from mid-October to mid-December and again from mid-January through to the end of March.  In these months the wind drops and water clears offering very adventuress dives.

Kiwayu Fishing: Some of the best fishing on the Kenyan coast takes place a mile offshore Kiwayu island.  Fish for sailfish, tuna, dorado, skip jack, wahoo, marlin etc or creek fishing for snapper, rock cod, trivalli, bone fish (rare) and many more species.
