Kisumu Day Trip Kakamega Rainforest 1 Day Tour takes you to the Kakamega Forest National Reserve situated in the Lake Victoria basin, about 50 km’s north of Kisumu city.

Being the only remnant in Kenya of the unique Guineo-Congolian forest ecosystem, the park offers unique wildlife and scenic beauty. For bird and butterfly watchers, this is the place to visit.

The forest is home to over 400 species of butterflies, about 300 bird species and 27 species of snakes (home to Africa’s largest and most aggressive Cobra.

The Kakamega forest Cobra – reputed by locals to spend a lot of time in the trees, stories abound of fearsome attacks on unsuspecting passers-by.

Other snakes in the area include the  forest adder, black mamba, and the green mamba). The park also supports more than 350 species of trees and 7 primate species including the endangered DeBrazza monkey, black and white colobus monkey and vervet monkey.

The Potto (the world’s slowest mammal on earth), duikers and Dik diks are also found in Kakamega Forest National Reserve. The forest has resident populations of primates, including the rare red tailed monkey, butterflies, chameleons and stunning bird-life, such as the giant Blue Turaco.

Kisumu Day Trip Kakamega Rainforest 1 Day Tour Itinerary

0800 Hours: After breakfast at your hotel in Kisumu/ residence you depart by road to Kakamega Forest National Reserve just 30 miles north of Kisumu in the Lake Victoria region of western Kenya about an hour’s drive.

0900 Hours: Once at the park we proceed for our full day walk which takes about 5 to 7 hours.

We walk through the forest watching birds and various species of monkeys, massive native trees marked as the “Big five” and their medicinal values, butterflies, birds, climb on the canopy watch tower and tour the natural grassland.

Along the way we see primates, birds, some animals e.g. bush back, blue duiker, red duiker then we proceed to Isiukhu River where we see the water falls, then we proceed to Buyangu hill lookout where we view the Kakamega forest from the top.

Birds include Great blue turaco, Blue headed bee-eater, Turners Eremomela, Yellow bellied wattle-eye, African shrike-flycatcher, Petit’s cuckoo-shrike and many others.

1400 Hours: We visit the Luyha community and the market around the forest and see the local thatched community bandas, community home stays, indigenous vegetables and community land cultivation.

1600 Hours: Drive to Kisumu past the weeping stone of kakamega. Visit Riat hills for panoramic view of Lake Victoria and kisumu city.

1700 Hours: Arrive back at your hotel/ residence in Kisumu.
