Transworld safaris operate Hot Air Balloon Safaris in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, South Western Kenya. Flights take off daily at dawn from our launch sites. Your Pilot will brief you the evening before the safari. Early mornings are generally clear & excellent for flying.

Transworld Safaris cater to clients from neighboring lodges and camps within the three distinct launch points. These are as follows: Mara Serena Lodge, Mara Safari Club, and nearby hotels such as Ngerende Island Camp, Exploreans Mara Rianta, Mara House & Richard’s River Camp, etc.

Mara Sarova Camp and nearby hotels such as Mara Sopa Lodge, Mara Simba Lodge, Siana Springs, Mara Bush Tops, Keekorok Lodge, Sekenani Camp, Tipilikwani, Sentrim Mara Camp, and Mara Leisure Camp.

Your ballooning adventure begins just before dawn. Optimum atmospheric conditions for Hot Air Balloon flights here in Kenya are very early in the morning. Your anticipation begins the evening before as you look forward to the thrill of the following morning.

Rise early and transfer to your launch site. As the sun’s golden glow tinges on the eastern horizon, the crew completes the necessary preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight. Your pilot gives you a last-minute briefing on safety procedures and the powerful burners are ignited to bring the colorful craft to life.

The ground crew helps you aboard after one final check by the pilot, the aerostat is heated up and as you are airborne the stunning panorama unfolds. The Balloon silently soars over the vast Masai Mara ecosystem & the snaking Mara River – The wilds of Africa! Your pilot gently lands on the open plains of the Masai Mara.

You return to earth – Celebration! As the crew scurries to set up your buffet breakfast near your landing site champagne corks pop into the air to toast your return.

* Passengers are asked to wear warm clothes for the flight: (i.e. light fleece, cardigan, etc)
* The rates above include Council landing fees and are subject to change without prior notice
* Please note that the above rate is for adults and children above 7 years (below 8 years not allowed although special requests can be made and confirmed at the time of booking subject to final confirmation by the Pilot on the launch field) 
* Unsuitable weather (such as strong wind, rain, etc} may result in the flight being canceled. In such an event, the pilot will reschedule for the next day’s flight, subject to availability and subject again to there being suitable weather
* In case you are not able to take the flight, you will be refunded in full less only bank fee charges. Balloon passengers are not permitted to carry onto the flight any equipment or bulky lenses/ cameras apart from standard cameras up to a weight of 5 kg, per person
* Typically, the Balloon Safari itself is approximately an hour long (weather permitting), followed by breakfast in the bush! You are then driven back to the lodge/ camp with game viewing en route

1. What should you bring with you?
Something warm to wear on top (fleece or a sweater), A hat, a camera, and binoculars – nothing too heavy.

2. What’s the duration of the flight?
The average flight duration is 1 hour traveling approximately 15 to 25 km depending on wind conditions.

3. What is the launch time and drive to the launch site?
Launch time is between 6:00 and 6:30 am (sunrise), it is a 10-minute drive from Mara Simba Lodge to our launch site.

4. How high do we fly?
We can fly from a few centimeters above the ground up to 12,500 ft above sea level, legally above 12500 feet A.G.L oxygen needed.

5. How do we get to the launch site and back to the hotel?
We provide transport to and from your hotel/lodge/camp. Upon your request, we may take you on a game drive after the Champagne Breakfast.

6. Where do we land?
It all depends on the wind on any given day – 95% of days the wind takes us south, deep into the Masai Mara Reserve where we land.

7. How does the pilot control the balloon?
The pilot controls the vertical access by heating or cooling the balloon (envelope). If the pilot adds heat to the envelope the balloon goes up and if he lets the envelope cool, the balloon will go down. If the pilot wants to stay buoyant in equilibrium, he will keep the envelope at the same temperature.

The balloons fly by the wind. If there are winds of a different directions at different heights the pilot can go up or down and steer the balloon according to the direction of the wind.
