Departing from Dar es Salaam we drive to Mikumi National Park on Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit. Mikumi National Park encompasses about 3 230 km² (1 247 mi²) of the Morogoro Region, forming part of the broader Selous Ecosystem. Arriving at Mikumi Park we check-in and embarking on our exciting game drive in the untamed bush.  Game drives are usually conducted on the open grasslands of the Mkata Plains which attract a variety of grazers and predators. The grasslands of Mikumi resemble the open savannahs of the Serengeti Plains dotted with acacias and baobab trees. In between the game drive in the park, we pause for lunch before continuing on a thrilling game drive. Late afternoon we depart for Dar es Salaam making our way back to where our memorable adventure began.

Predators found here include wild dogs, lions, jackals, hyenas, and even leopards. We may also see giraffes, hippos, baboons, and vervet monkeys. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania’s important birding areas, with over 400 species recorded here. Species include Boehm’s bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, Dickinson’s kestrel, straw-tailed whydah, Bateleur eagle, superb starling, and African fish eagle.

Dar es Salaam 1 Day Tours Mikumi National Park Safari

Dar es Salaam 1 Day Tours Mikumi National Park Safari is a short tour from Dar es Salaam to Tanzania’s “Southern Circuit” Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park is located in south-central Tanzania, 283 km (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam. The park hosts small and large mammals including a variety of bird species and reptiles.

Our 1 Day Tour to Mikumi National Park takes you to Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, covering an area of 3,230 km² (1,250 miles²). It borders Africa’s biggest game reserve – the Selous Game Reserve and is well-known for its boundless opportunities to spot the famous African Big Five – Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino, and of course Lion.

Accompanied by a qualified and knowledgeable guide, we embark on 4×4 game drives in Mikumi, going in search of the abundant wildlife and birds found here. Three of the big five can be regularly sighted within the Mikumi borders: lion, elephant, and buffalo, many of which have characteristics specific to this area.

Mikumi lions are famous for exhibiting the rare behavior of climbing on trees, and there is the unusual phenomenon of ‘midget elephants’, which are smaller than the normal African elephants and have less distinct tusks. Mikumi is also popular for sightings of the world’s largest antelope – the eland.

A subspecies of giraffe, that has been classified as a link between the Masai giraffe and the Reticulated or Somali giraffe, can be found grazing among the savannah’s baobabs, tamarinds, acacias, and rare palms. In the north of the park, hippopotami inhabit the two artificial ponds and are joined by an array of water birds.

On the open grasslands of the Mkata Plains, we are likely to see numerous herbivores including wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, and eland (Africa’s largest antelope), amongst other antelopes. Elephants are also commonly sighted in Mikumi. We may be lucky enough to see lions and even leopards or wild dogs. Other carnivores found here include jackals, hyenas, and crocodiles.

Mikumi National Park is popular with bird watchers, as it provides living and breeding space for over 400 species of birds, including European migrating birds using it as their winter residence.

Bird sightings include yellow-throated long claws, bateleur and African fish eagles, black-bellied bustards, lilac-breasted rollers, marabou storks, oxpeckers, straw-tailed whydahs, and Boehm’s bee-eaters.
