Meteorological Station Cabins & Campsite Mount Kenya Naro Moru Route

Met Station Cabins Mount Kenya Climbing Accommodation is located in Mt Kenya at 3,050 meters/10,007 feet and is the first campsite encountered while climbing the mountain using the Naro Moru route and is just about a kilometer shy of the edge and the start of the heathland zone of the mountain. It is also the location of a meteorological station and one of the few campsites that are accessible by road, with a dirt track that ends at its location.

Climbers at the campsite have the choice of either using the Met Station Cabins for accommodation or using the Meteorological Station Campsite. From here, Mackinder’s campsite is the next if you are on the standard Naro Moru route climb. Rainy days are a common sight at this camp, thus make sure you have waterproofing (clothes, tents, etc). Animals you most likely would see include monkeys and birds. Buffalos come near the camp at night.

The Met Station Cabins are dormitory-style wooden houses. There are 3 Cabins with 10 bunk beds with mattresses in each room capable of accommodating up to 30 guests. They have a dining table in the middle of each room, Wi-fi enabled with a high-speed internet connection to allow the guests to access the internet, solar energy generating system where guests can charge phones, solar-powered lighting, and a snack shop with beers, soft drinks, and spirits for sale. Each cabin has an external flush toilet.

There is no food available thus everyone using the camp has to bring their own food, but there is a good supply of cold water available from several taps. One needs to bring warm clothing and a sleeping bag. Apart from the cabins, climbers at the camp can also sleep in their own tents and the camp is open to those climbing the mountain, as well as those seeking to just spend a night out in the wild without trekking. Either way, you would have to pay park fees in advance. Most of the people you would see at the campsite would be either those headed up the mountain to Mackinder’s camp or those on their last day of the trek, headed down to the Naro Moru gate.

Meteorological Station Cabins & Campsite Mount Kenya Naro Moru Route

Met Station Cabins/ Campsite (at 3,050 meters/10,007 feet) is located inside Mount Kenya’s rainforest zone, albeit just about a kilometer shy of the edge and the start of the heathland zone of the mountain. From here, the next campsite would depend on the route you are on, with the Mackinder’s campsite being next if you are on the standard Naro Moru route.

The met station cabins & campsite are encountered while climbing the mountain using the Naro Moru route. It is also the location of a meteorological station and one of the few campsites that are accessible by road, with a dirt track that ends at its location.

Climbers at the cabins/ campsite have the choice of using the cabins for accommodation, which are privately owned. These are dormitory-style wooden houses with bunk beds in each room capable of accommodating up to 20 people, with toilets being external latrines.

There is no food available thus everyone using the camp has to bring their own food, but there is a good supply of cold water available from several taps. Most of the people you would see at the campsite would be either those headed up the mountain to Mackinder’s camp or those on their last day of the trek, headed down to the Naro Moru gate.

Apart from the cabins, climbers at the camp can also sleep in their own tents and the camp is open to those climbing the mountain, as well as those seeking to just spend a night out in the wild without trekking. Either way, you would have to pay park fees as well as a book in advance.

To get to the Met Station from the Naro Moru Gate, you hike from 2500 meters to 3050 meters. The distance is about 10 km and it takes about 5 hours. This trail leads through the forest along a ridge between the two branches of the Naro Moru River. About 6 to 7 km from the park gate, the trail crosses Percival’s Bridge, then continues north then eats again, as it gains the lower Teleki Valley.

The trail soon reaches the Meteorological Station (“Met Station”) at 3050 meters. Here you find the Met Station Lodge which accommodates about 30 guests. The lodge has several latrines and water is readily available from the taps near each banda. This is where most trekkers spend their first night. Book Naro Moru River Lodge’s Met Station before climbing Mt. Kenya.

This is intended to ensure that you have a place to sleep as you climb up the mountain and to avoid the accommodation environment becoming excessively polluted during the holiday.
