Climbing Kilimanjaro 6 Days Lemosho Route Hike; The Lemosho Route is the most scenic and most beautiful Kilimanjaro route, from the first day to the last.

It is widely considered to be the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route.

But as Tanzania’s tourism industry flourished, the Kilimanjaro park authority created more trails to African’s highest peak. Lemosho, a relatively new route, is preferred by reputable operators due to its beauty, remoteness and success rate.

In short, it maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy the experience overall. The trail begins north of Shira, also on the western side of the mountain.

But unlike the Shira Route where for the first day you walk on a wide 4 WD road, Lemosho is a narrow wilderness trail right from the beginning.

It passing through pristine and remote rainforest with good chances of seeing wildlife. It then crosses the Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route near the Lava Tower.

Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000 Feet. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000 Feet.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4600 Meters/ 15,000 Feet) Hike to Summit (5895 Meters/ 19,345 Feet) to Mweka Hut (3068 Meters/ 10,000 Feet)

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.

You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting).

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch.

You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.

Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. The hiking time up is 7 to 8 Hours and the distance covered is 5 Kilometers through Arctic.

The hiking time down is 4 to 6 Hours and the distance covered is 12 Kilometers through Arctic.

Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village.

A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi. The hiking time up is 3 to 4 Hours and the distance covered is 10 Kilometers through Rain Forest.
