Bomas of Kenya Day Tour in Nairobi (Tribal Village Visit - Traditional Songs & Dance)

Bomas Kenya Nairobi Cultural Day Tour is a half-day culture tour of Nairobi that gives you insight into the tribes, and culture along with the history of the Kenyan people. The Bomas of Kenya is a tourist village in Langata, Nairobi, and offers you an opportunity to learn and experience the rich diversity of Kenyan traditional music and dance as well as visiting a village constructed to represent elements of each of Kenya’s 42 ethnic groups. This guided tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Nairobi followed by a transfer to Bomas of Kenya where you get to learn more about Kenya’s 42 ethnic groups and also watch traditional performances in dance, music, and storytelling. Later you are dropped back to your hotel after the tour.

Beginning and ending from your residence in Nairobi, the tour takes you to the Bomas of Kenya located approximately 10 km (6 miles) from Nairobi Central Business District, 1 km past the main entrance of Nairobi National Park. In the company of a resident guide, you begin by visiting the traditional houses that are set out in clusters according to the region. The homes are grouped with the first wife’s hut, second wife’s hut, granary, etc. You can see where the livestock are kept and the enormous variety between the huts.

After our educational tour, we proceeded to an auditorium to watch cultural performances from over 50 different ethnic communities. With live percussion, string, and wind instruments, and diverse, authentic, and energetic dancing, Bomas Harambee Dancers will take you on a journey through Kenya’s past and present. From Western Kenya and the shores of Lake Victoria (Nyanza) through Rift Valley, Central and Eastern Kenya to North-eastern and Coastal Kenya, our daily shows display an array of diverse musical and dance traditions.

Some of the dances you can experience include the impressive Maasai Eunoto dance, the Kikuyu Circumcision dance, the spectacular Chuka drummers, Coastal Sengenya and Gonda dances, the Swahili Taarab, NubiDholuka dance, and many more. From Thursday to Sunday, the daily shows also feature the fabulous Mambo Jambo acrobats, who showcase the best of acrobatics, including balancing, rope skipping, juggling, fire limbo, etc.

Bomas of Kenya was initiated in 1971 after Kenya’s independence (1964) and it is run by the Kenyan Government and aims to promote Kenya’s rich cultural heritage. In addition to the main attractions (the dancers and the traditional homesteads), there is also a large, wooden play area for young children, a small, low-key village of craft shops, and other attractions. Schedule of Performances: Monday to Friday: 1430 hours to 1600 hours | Weekends and Public Holidays: 1530 hours to 1715 hours.

After the tour, you are dropped off at your accommodation of choice within Nairobi city limits.
