Arusha Shanga River House Lunch Crafts Store Day Tour is a 2 to 3 hour guilt-free shopping trip with lunch at the Shanga River House Restaurant in Arusha

Shanga River House is a for-profit organization that teaches and supports the local disabled who make beautiful souvenirs ranging from glass jewelry [great way to recycle] to fabric products like elephant pillows and bags.

They also partner with other local designers/ organizations that help the local community and wildlife. Shanga River House workshops and shop are open 7 days a week from 0930 Hours to 1630 hours.

Shanga is simply amazing. People with disabilities, some who might otherwise be tossed away or ignored by society, are empowered through art, and they make some beautiful things on-site using recycled materials.

Trash is a big problem in Tanzania; people burn it, and there was plenty along the side of the road, so being able to channel that trash into beautiful merchandise goes a long way in keeping this beautiful country clean.

Shanga was founded in 2007 when local resident, Saskia Rechsteiner, made a handful of fabric necklaces for a Christmas Fair in Arusha, Tanzania. Combining local fabric with some beads and her sons’ marbles, she created a unique necklace that sold out within hours. The days after the fair were busy – orders for the necklaces came in from safari companies, gift shops and even people who wanted to export them to Japan and Australia.

Over the years Shanga has grown to employ more than 60 people with a range of disabilities to make creative products including weaving, glass blowing, beading, paper making and metal work, using recycled materials wherever possible.

In 2017 Shanga was acquired by Elewana, our workshop and store are now located in the grounds of the beautiful Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge. Our staff are pleased to have such a beautiful and safe working space and have the ongoing support for our project and foundation through Elewana CSR program.

Did you know… ‘Shanga’ is the Swahili word for bead! Shanga is a FREE visitor destination and is open for tours and activities 9am – 4.30pm every day of the year. Visitors are welcome to stop by anytime, or advanced bookings can be made for larger groups and tailored experiences. For bookings please contact info@africanspicesafaris.com.
