Serengeti National Park

A perfect 3-day short getaway from the town of Mwanza to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s top safari destination and one of the most famous game parks in Africa.  The Serengeti is situated in northwest Tanzania and joins the Maasai Mara Game Reserve at its northern border with Kenya.

The Serengeti is the mother of all safari parks and the most celebrated wildlife reserve in the world. Renowned for its incredible concentrations of predators and the Great Migration of 2 million wildebeest, the Serengeti guarantees an exceptional safari.

The tour begins from Mwanza,  Tanzania’s second-largest city, set on Lake Victoria’s shore. Serengeti National Park Ndabaki Gate is about 140 kilometers northeast of Mwanza along the Mwanza – Musoma road and gives direct access to the Western Corridor (driving time is 3 hours).

Our Serengeti game drive begins from the Serengeti Ndabaki Gate and takes us to Seronera which is central Serengeti taking about 3 hours. The western corridor of the Serengeti landscape is more wooded and it is common to see giraffe, elephants, zebra, impala, topi, ostrich, hippo, waterbuck, and many smaller animals.

The central Serengeti is a large plain and full of tall grass. Here we find big cats such as lions, leopards, cheetah, and other animals such as hyena, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, giraffe, eland, kongoni, impala, and other antelope. If the time is right, the wildebeest migration is incredible to see.

From February to May, a herd of over a million wildebeest (gnu), along with more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle migrate for the Western Corridor of the park, in search of greener pastures. The endless Serengeti Plains provide superb game viewing in a stunning bush environment year-round.

We have a picnic lunch in the Serengeti Park and make our way to our overnight lodge/ camp, game viewing en route. Serengeti accommodation options include Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Mbalageti Serengeti, One Nature Hotel Nyaruswiga Serengeti and Serengeti Safari Lodge.

We spend the whole of day two exploring the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania, pausing for a picnic lunch in the wilderness. Here we will hopefully see the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo), as well as a dazzling assortment of other wildlife.

During and after the rainy seasons you may be lucky enough to catch the Great Migration in full force. Usually, between October and November, and again from April to June, masses of plains game migrate across the rivers and plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

After a remarkable day of game viewing in Serengeti National Park, we return to the camp/ lodge surrounded by the African wilderness.

Day three starts with breakfast at camp/ lodge, as the sun rises. Then we take a game drive through Serengeti Park on our way out of the national park, stopping for lunch as we go. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, especially in the early morning hours when animals and birds are more active.

Our magical 3-day Serengeti road Safari comes to a close late afternoon in Mwanza.

Serengeti National Park Highlights | What to Do and See

Serengeti Visitor Center: The Serengeti Visitor Centre is worth a stop for its self-guided walking path that provides informative signs and exhibits about the history of the Serengeti, its ecosystem, and its wildlife.

The Serengeti’s Great Migration: Throughout the year huge herds of wildebeest and zebra move in a clockwise direction around the vast plains, searching for fresh grazing grounds.

Witnessing the migration in the Serengeti is really as good as it gets in terms of your Tanzania Safari.

Serengeti daytime game drives:  The main attraction here is the wildlife. Serengeti National Park houses a huge population of large mammals, including giraffes, baboons, elephants, hippos, and, of course, lions.

You’ll also come across more than 500 species of birds, most notably, ostriches. When you tire of gazing at grazers, head to Moru Kopjes to mingle with rhinos or to the Retina Hippo Pool to watch these massive mammals splash about.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris: There are no words that can do the experience of floating over the Serengeti justice.” Get a birds-eye view of the park as you rise alongside the sun.

The flight lasts about an hour, after which passengers gather round a table, surrounded by the park’s lush plains, for an “Out of Africa” English-style breakfast.
