Kit Mikayi Rock Formation

3 Days 2 Nights Kisumu Kit Mikaye Ndere Island Safari offers an opportunity to enjoy a cultural experience in Kisumu. The itinerary features a visit to Kit Mikaye and Ndere Island National Park.

Kit-Mikayi (also spelled Kit Mikayi, Kit Mikayi, Kitmikayi, and Kitmikaye) is a rock formation, a tor, around 40 meters high, situated about 29 km west of the town of Kisumu in western Kenya. Kisumu, formerly Port Florence, is a Kenyan inland port city on Lake Victoria.

The rock formation is located about a km from the Kisumu-Bondo road. KIT- MIKAYE: According to the Luo legend, these famous rocks form the place where Mikaye (the mother of the Luo tribe) sheltered herself after a long journey down the Nile.

The local people still believe that Mikaye can be spotted around this place. The tour also includes a visit to Ndere Island National Park, located on Lake Victoria. The Island is a 45-minute speedboat ride directly from Kisumu city, or a 40 km drive followed by a 20-minute boat ride.

Ndere Island National Park is a haven for birds. Covered mostly by grassland, Ndere Island offers beautiful scenic views of the Homa Hills to the south, Mageta Island to the east, and glimpses of Kampala in Uganda beyond the south-west horizon.

The lakeshore supports a wide variety of animals, including hippos, monitor lizards, Nile crocodiles, several fish species, snakes, baboons, impalas, the rare sitatunga antelopes, waterbucks, zebras, and warthogs.

Over 100 different species of birds can be seen here, including African fish eagles, black-headed gonoleks, and grey-headed kingfishers.
