Zanzibar Stone Town Things to Do And See

Zanzibar Stone town has many attractions and you will be spoilt for choice. The following are the top things to do for a day while visiting Zanzibar:

Stone Town City Tour by Foot: a walking tour that takes you through Stone town visiting the House of Wonders, Arab Fort, Zanzibar’s bustling market, cathedrals, mosques, and gift shops. This half-day can be combined with the Spice Tour to make a full-day tour.

Spice Tour Half-Day Trip: This is a guided walking tour to learn about Zanzibar spices which are an essential ingredient in Zanzibar’s everyday life.

A walk through villages and spice plantations enables you to see spice farm workers climb trees, seek out specific plants, and cuts off various barks, letting you see, feel, and taste everything.

The tour includes a traditional Swahili lunch. Buy fresh spices while visiting the spice farms.

Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP):  Visit an award-winning private nature reserve that includes a fully protected coral reef sanctuary, a forest reserve that harbour rare and endangered animals, a visitor and education centre, a small eco-lodge, nature trails, and historical ruins.

The sanctuary has more than 200 pieces of pristine stone corals, about 400 species of fish and turtles & dolphins regularly passing by.

Local Game Fishing: Forget fishing in a modern fishing vessel with the latest in reels and rods and a fighting chair as well! We offer you the unique opportunity to sail out to sea with a Zanzibar fisherman and show you what ‘fishing for a living’ is really all about.

We will equip you with simple fishing gear, with what locals are even catching kingfish, yellowfin tuna, barracuda, and grouper. A real adventure!

Deep-Sea Fishing: The spice island of Zanzibar is home to some of the best big game and deep-sea fishing opportunities in the Indian Ocean. This deep-sea fishing in Zanzibar is located at the northern tip of Nungwi, a fishing village, which is the fishing grounds of Zanzibar.

We fish by trolling a combination of lures or natural dead baits (Ballyhoo or strips) or live bait. The boats are available for Half Day or Full Day charters.

Jozani Forest Tour: This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red colobus monkey. At Jozani, you will also visit the Mangrove swamp and walk around the Mangrove forest. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well-trained and informative.

A walk through this impressive flora and fauna is one of the highlights Zanzibar has to offer.  It is easy to combine this trip with the Jambiani Village Tour or the Spice Tour.

Sandbank Picnic: Full-day dhow excursion which includes sailing, snorkelling, and swimming. The tour departs Stone town and sails to Bawe Island for snorkelling with a guide to see the stunning array of coloured corals and tropical fish of the islands. Then sail to a sandbank for lunch.

Afterwards, relax and swim around the sand bank before sailing back to Stone Town. This tour departs at 0900 Hours and returns at 1500 Hours.

Unguja Ukuu Boat Trip: Unguja Ukuu is the name of the village, for now, a place where Zanzibar’s tourists rarely if ever set foot.

This boat trip begins in Unguja Ukuu village, far off the tourist’s tracks visiting uninhabited islands, Miwi and Nianembe or Kwale in the protected Menai Bay, to see the unique flora and fauna of Zanzibar’s tropical islands.

The boat ride is 45 minutes from the beach. You stand some chance of spotting dolphins here – but not guaranteed. The trip includes sunbathing, beach relaxation, swimming, and snorkelling.

Prison Island Half-Day Boat Trip: This tour offers you the opportunity to visit a former prison for slaves and a quarantine station for Zanzibar and the mainland.

It is also a great way to see wildlife and learn some history, and also see Stone Town from the sea as many old maritime legends would have done.

Once on the island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises, if you have time you may also like to take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colourful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies.

Zanzibar Cultural Day Tours: get the feel of the local life of Jambiani Village – situated on the southeast coast of Zanzibar Island, some 45 km from the main city Stone Town. Zanzibar cultural day tour Jambiani village trip allows you to meet the Swahili culture up close and personal!

The tour is planned in cooperation with the village and includes the following places of interest within the village: visit a seaweed farm, enjoy the delicious local cuisine, visit a school and/ or health clinic, learn about Swahili Zanzibar handicrafts and meet locals and experience the village life.

Zanzibar Safari Blue Day Tour is one of the most popular day trips from Stone Town Zanzibar. Also known as Safari Blue, this full-day tour is spent dolphin watching, snorkelling, dhow sailing, and tasting the best of Zanzibar’s fruits and seafood.

This excursion includes snacks and drinks at a sandbank and a sumptuous seafood lunch with rock lobster and unlimited drinks on a desert island.  A Safari Blue day is packed with adventure…Sail, snorkel, swim, sunbathe, explore, feast, observe, play, etc.

Zanzibar Dolphin Day Tours Kizimkazi Boat Trip is purely a dolphin exploration excursion. The spotting location in Zanzibar is in Kizimkazi village located on the Southern coast of Zanzibar Island.

This is where you can see both bottle-nose and humpback dolphins. Kizimkazi village is located about 50 km from Stone Town and 20 km to the east coast of Zanzibar.
