Meru National Park is known for its fauna and natural beauty and also has many swamps and rivers lined with palms, as well as mountains and woodlands.

This is the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free“, which was later made into a successful film. The park is home to a large pride of lions, herds of buffalo, and hippos and crocodiles that live in the rivers.

Samburu National Park is one of the lesser-known national parks, but is nevertheless teeming with life. Situated alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, there is plenty to attract wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains.

Lake Nakuru National Park is Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary and is also a bird sanctuary that hosts over 400 bird species. There are a variety of wildlife in the park.

Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake which offers boat ride opportunities where one can see fish and colorful birds.

The Reserve’s herd of rare Greater Kudu makes it unique and other game to view includes buffalo (rare), zebra, baboon, warthog, caracal, spotted hyena, impala, dik dik and many small mammals.

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake and is part of the Great Rift Valley. The name derives from the local Masai name Nai’posha, meaning “rough water” because of the sudden storms which can arise.

The lake is home to a variety of wildlife; over 400 different species of bird have been reported. This freshwater lake is a birding paradise. There is a sizeable population of hippos in the lake.

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Meru National Park
Depart Nairobi in the morning after breakfast and travel Northwards through the Central Kenya Highlands, viewing the rich agricultural farmlands and the majestic Snow-capped Mount Kenya straddling the Equator.

Stop at Nanyuki for a short rest taking Pictures of the stunningly picturesque surroundings and the Mountain, then proceed to Meru National Park, arriving early afternoon for late lunch.

Day 2: Explore Meru National Park
Meru forms part of a larger wilderness area along the Tana River, including Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves, Kora national park and Rahole national reserve.

The wetter north-western sector is hilly, with rich volcanic soils. Numerous permanent streams cross the Park, and three large rivers straddle the reserve: the Tana to the south, the Ura to the south-west and the Rojeweru to the east.

The park was made famous by the writings of Joy Adamson, most noted for her book Born Free, the true story of Elsa, the lioness, and her return into the wild.

During ‘spice’ game drive the wildlife you are likely to in Meru include: Over 400 bird species have been recorded. You should see: Baboon; Buffalo; Bushbuck; Duiker, Eland; Elephant, Gazelle, Genet, Gerenuk; Giraffe, Hartebeest and Hippo.

Other animals include: Hyena, Hyrax, Impala; Jackal, Kudu, Lion; Mongoose, Vervet Monkey, Oribi; Oryx, Steenbok; Suni, Warthog; Waterbuck and Zebra.

You may see: wild dog, aardwolf; bush baby, Caracal; Cheetah; Civet, Dik-dik; Leopard; Otter, Pangolin, Bush Pig, Porcupine, Ratel; Reed buck, Black and white rhino; Serval; Shrew and Squirrel.

Day 3: Meru National Park – Drive to Samburu Game Reserve
Depart in the Morning by road to Samburu Game Reserve located at the North rugged Semi desert region.

Samburu Game Reserve is a wild and little visited region, well known for spectacular scenery and wildlife not found in the south.

They include the Reticulated Giraffe, the rare Grevy’s Zebra with its large furry ears, the gerenuk Antelope standing on its hind legs to feed and Somali Ostriches with their distinctive blue legs.

Lunch upon arrival at your lodge then proceed on a ‘Spice’ game drive.

Day 4: Explore Samburu Game Reserve
Full day in Samburu with morning and afternoon ‘Spice’ game drives. You may see Elephants, Cheetah, Leopard, Eland, Oryx, Impala, Dikdik, Waterbuck and a variety of birds.

This lava plain includes a varied landscape of red dirt, thorn scrub, broken volcanic rock, dried riverbeds, steep hills and rocky outcroppings.

Following the river’s curves, a forest of Doum Palms, Acacia and tamarind is a magical contrast of cool green.

Other areas of the Reserve include the Uaso Nyiro River where crocodiles sun bath themselves on the banks. It also provides an oasis for a variety of game.

Birds are abundant, with 365 species recorded, one for every day of the year. In between the game drives, there is an opportunity to visit a Samburu village at an additional cost.

Day 5: Samburu National Park – Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park
Early morning breakfast at your lodge then depart Samburu Game Reserve with a game en-route to Lake Nakuru National Park arriving in time for lunch and check in at Lake Nakuru lodge or similar.

Late afternoon, proceed on a game drive in the park famous for great masses of Flamingos, both white Rhino and black rhino etc.

Game and bird viewing drives at the Lake Nakuru national park with opportunities to view Rhino.

Lake Nakuru National Park offering a wide ecological diversity, from lakeshore, woodlands, grassy plains to rocky escarpments and ridges.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park – Drive to Lake Baringo
Wake up for an early game drive in the Lake Nakuru National Park before returning to the lodge then departing for Lake Baringo.

We explore Lake Baringo which is famous as a bird watchers paradise, with over 450 species recorded. Lake Baringo hosts a good population of crocodiles and hippos.

Day 7: Explore Lake Baringo
The lake is a fresh water lake fed by El Molo and Ol Arabel rivers. The wetlands of Lake Baringo have not only received accolades as a RAMSAR site, but are also a heaven for bird lovers around the world.

More than 470 species have been recorded, ranging from waterfowl to raptors.

On the eastern side of the lake is the famous Rock of Gibraltar, and Ol Kokwe Island dominates the center of the lake. The Njemps people maintain a village on the island.

You can also take a boat ride to deep waters away from the crocodiles and hippos under the guidance of a professional for fishing and swimming.

There is a community conservancy on an island in the lake which houses giraffes, warthogs, ostriches, and Impalas.

Day 8: Lake Baringo – Drive to Lake Naivasha
After breakfast depart for lake Bogoria where there are hot Geysers and is also a seasonal home to one of the world’s largest populations of lesser flamingos.

There’s also plenty of wildlife in and around Lake Bogoria. Afterwards proceed to lake Naivasha arriving in time for lunch.The lake is a birding paradise with over 400 species of birds.

Along the lake’s fabled waters, we are bound to see some of the area’s more intriguing species—hippos, giraffes, buffalo and even the arboreal colobus monkey.

After lunch we visit Crescent island- a private sanctuary, where you can walk beneath yellow-barked acacias (yellow fever trees) in search of giraffes, wildebeest , impala, dik diks, Thompson’s and grant’s gazelles, elands, waterbucks and countless bird species.

Oh, and there are some rather gigantic pythons too! We are allowed to walk with the animals since all were introduced during the filming of Out of Africa.

An optional boat ride on the lake reveals many water bird species and schools of Hippos

Day 9: Explore Lake Naivasha National Park

After breakfast, visit Hells gate National Reserve, the only reserve in Kenya where you can enjoy game viewing while on a bicycle.

Other activities to participate in include horse riding and hiking at Mt. Longonot National Park. Elsamere Conservation Centre is located on the southern shores of beautiful Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley.

Visitors can see many of Joy’s paintings in the house and explore the museum which features memorabilia from the lives of the Adamson’s

Day 10: Lake Naivasha – Drive to Nairobi
