Zanzibar Dhow Experience

A cruise on a traditional wooden dhow is unforgettable, and an essential part of your Zanzibar holiday experience. Glide silently across the Indian Ocean to the sound of clean white sails being beaten by the wind. Cruise around the several surrounding islands, and jump overboard to explore a few. Enjoy lunch on the dhow, and experience a Zanzibar sunset while out at sea. And if part of you needs a little reassurance, most of the dhows have inboard or outboard motors, just in case the wind decides to leave you at the mercy of a stilled Indian Ocean.

Summary Itinerary

Your adventure starts from Stone Town hotel we you are picked and transferred to Fumba village, south west of Stone Town. Fumba is the most convenient location for exploring the wildlife, isolated sandbanks and rugged island scenery of the Menai Bay Conservation Area. African Spice Safaris Zanzibar Dhow cruise is not just a day out on a traditional sailing dhow with good food. You need to come prepared to get your feet wet, enjoy new experiences, make new friends and most importantly, have the most memorable day of your life.

Keep a lookout for both humpback and bottlenose dolphins, as you explore the Menai bay. We practice a policy of responsible dolphin watching and are lucky enough to see dolphins on 90% of our excursions. Explore the mangrove lagoon hidden inside Kwale island. A swim through the protected mangrove forest at high tide is an unforgettable experience.

Before lunch is served, go Snorkeling in the sparkling blue water. Menai bay has several naturally occurring sandbanks with safe swimming and from where you can enjoy great snorkeling. Lunch includes Seafood. Taste the flavors of Zanzibar at our desert island restaurant on Kwale island. Seafood barbecue includes fish, calamari and slipper lobster served hot from the grill. Then enjoy a tropical fruit tasting – a gastronomic delight! “Chakula Chema”!

In the afternoon you have the exceptional chance to join an experienced crew and sail on an Ngalawa, or outrigger canoe, made by hand from a single mango tree. The journey back will be by sail, wind permitting.
