Perfectly located in the leafy suburb of Langata the shop is easy to drop into on your way to some of the exciting venues in Nairobi such as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust or the Giraffe Centre. You can sit in the beautiful garden with refreshments and then wind your way through a treasure trove of shops, with friendly staff to assist and help pack or ship if needed.

Utamaduni was originally set up as a unique house of crafts to appeal to tourists coming through Langata on their way to visit the game park or on their way back from the giraffe centre and elephant orphanage. Here, Kenya’s visitors could shop for exquisite African pieces to take home from the comfort of a relaxed environment.

It is an old Kikuyu house filled with Africa’s finest craftsmanship from upcycled jackets and silver jewelry to beautiful wooden bowls and intricately designed rugs, excited shoppers discovered a wealth of artifacts, accessories, homeware, and more. 18 rooms or ‘shops’ of fabrics, toys, baskets, beads, soaps, and smiles, this truly was Nairobi’s best-kept secret.

Browse through a variety of African arts and crafts at Utamaduni Craft Centre, a fixed-price mini-shopping center centered on souvenirs. Some 18 shops offer antiques, wood carvings, bronze pieces, various fabrics, beaded glassware, Kenyan kiondo baskets, bags, soapstone, and antique African silver and gold jewelry.

Don’t miss the Masai design shops, the large array of khangas and kikoys, and crafts made by former street children of Nairobi. Created by Kenya-born British anthropologist Richard Leakey, the center supports various artists all over Kenya and features a tranquil garden serving refreshments and light meals. You can also purchase postcards, Lamu furniture, and African music.
