Travelers
Mwaluganje Camp; Travelers Mwaluganje Camp
is set in the heart of the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary,
in the Mwaluganje Hills and a 45 km drive from Mombasa,
Kenya's city seaport and Coast capital, the camp
is set along the shoulder of a low hill facing a
traditional elephant trail, allowing guests to watch
the elephants from the comfort of their well-appointed
comfortable tents. The tents are twenty, simple,
twin-room structures with mosquito nets and are
self contained. There are often no mosquitoes though.
Mwaluganje
Elephant Sanctuary is a conservation area for
elephants, the great African pachyderm whose numbers
were threatened, until quite recently, by the
world demand for its precious ivory tusks. Today,
thanks to committed conservation action by Kenya's
government and private bodies, the elephant is
on the road to recovery. Mwaluganje is a shining
example of private efforts to make sure this magnificent
animal does not disappear.
Set
in the heart of the sanctuary is Travelers Mwaluganje
Elephant Camp, along the shoulder of a low hill
facing a traditional elephant trail, and which allows
guests to watch the elephants from the comfort of
their well-appointed luxury tents. This is the only
tented camp in this new Elephant Sanctuary.
Travelers
Mwaluganje Camp is the only tented camp in this
new sanctuary, and guests have virtually the entire
6,000 acres to themselves. The bird life is prolific
and will keep any bird watcher amazed at the variety
and color of the birds regularly seen throughout
the day and early evening.
The
traditional African evening camp-fire is the highlight
of the day, after an enthralling game drive through
the forest and bush. Over a cocktail or cool drink,
it is a time to recall the marvels of Africa's nature,
and to wonder at the majesty and dignity of the
stars of the show - the elephants.
Round
off the day with a superbly-cooked meal under the
stars, with the background music the hoot of an
owl, the yelp of a jackal, the trumpeting of an
elephant and occasionally the cough of a distant
leopard. For
a very different experience, Travelers Mwaluganje
Elephant Camp offers the highest standards of comfort,
good food, the same attentive and discreet service
which characterizes the group and, of course, lots
of elephants!

Camp Activities
Travelers
Mwaluganje Sanctuary is close to the South Coast
Mombasa beach resorts and offers virtually guaranteed
sightings of large numbers of elephants, in perfect
safety. Professionally, escorted game drives take
guests through forest and bush, where a variety
of animals may be watched and photographed.
Among
the many animals that reside in the sanctuary, which
is not fenced, so that wild animals live natural,
free lives as much as they have done for centuries,
are zebra, bushbuck, warthog, Colobus and Sykes'
monkeys and, with luck, leopard.
Travelers Mwaluganje Camp traditional African evening
campfire is the highlight of the day, after an enthralling
game drive. Over a cocktail or cool drink, it is
a time to recall the marvels of Africa's nature,
and to wonder at the majesty and dignity of the

Round
off the day with a superbly cooked meal under the
stars, with the background music - the hoot of an
owl, the yelp of a jackal, the trumpeting of an
elephant and occasionally the cough of a distant
leopard. For entertainment, local Digo and Duruma
tribe dancers occasionally perform. As a conservation
area for elephants, Mwaluganje is a shining example
of a private conservation campaign to preserve the
African elephant, which suffered enormous population
losses over two decades.
A
magnificent and unique animal, Mwaluganje offers
unrivalled opportunities to observe them at close
quarters.
