History About Joseph
Thomson and Thomson Falls Lodge Located in Nyahururu
In
1880, Joseph Thomson, a romantic adventurous Scotsman
landed in Mombasa to begin his first exploratory journey
in East Africa.
Three
years later, the Royal Geographic Society commissioned
him to return to East Africa and he set out from Mombasa
with 100 porters, headmen and interpreters. He took
with him supplies, articles for reading and the first
camera seen in East Africa.
Although Joseph Thomson
and his party faced continual skirmishes with the Masai,
he persisted with his mission. He once defused a confrontation
by spontaneously removing his false teeth, an act that
totally astonished the Masai Warriors.
On another occasion,
he convinced the Masai that his camera made him invincible
in battle. Thomson's expedition crossed a mountain range
that he named the Aberdare Mountains, after the president
of the Royal Geographical Society. He was the first
European to see the waterfall's and also lent his name
to the elegant Thomson's Gazelle.
In the later years,
Thomson wandered across West Sudan, the Atlas Mountains
and Northern Zambia and in 1895 he returned to Scotland
where he died at the age of 37.
