VICTORIA , RUSINGA ISLAND LODGE

Day 1 - Nairobi - Lake Victoria
Rusinga Island Lodge exudes an atmosphere of serene tranquility. Set on an island in the middle of the world's second largest freshwater lake, its manicured velvet lawns stretch to the water's edge and its exotic trees are a haven for birds- 369 species of them! With renowned hospitality, delightful hosts, organic home-grown food and indulgent accommodations, Rusinga is divine.

Romance resides in breathtaking sunsets over the lake, moonlit dinners on the jetty and candlelit champagne in the Jacuzzi. Its six enchanting stone and thatch cottages, beds dramatically draped in sheer white netting, offer splendid views from verandas facing the sweep of the lawn to the lake beyond.

Day 2 - Lake Victoria
Breakfast and lunch are served under sprawling fig trees in the garden-the same trees under which palaeoanthropologists Mary and Louis Leakey camped in 1948 when making their revolutionary discovery of Proconsul Heseloni. Today, we visit the site where fossil remains, dating from 20 million years ago, can still be seen scattered upon the ground. Then, maybe we'll troll the lake's shallow waters for its legendary Nile perch (growing up to 300 pounds!) or boat to a nearby island to view ancient rock art. And there's always the spa-a halcyon oasis with myriad treatments.

Day 3 - Lake Victoria
A boat trip to Bird Island reveals thousands of roosting water birds, giant monitor lizards and spotted-necked otters on the rocks. The friendly Luo tribe fish along these shores in their colorful canoes and sailing dhows, and it's a pleasure to visit their villages where the night's catch is set out to dry in the sun and larger fish are smoked. We may also take a short drive to Ruma National Park where the last surviving group of Roan antelope in Kenya can be seen, as well as endangered Rothschild giraffes, Jackson 's hartebeest, Bohor reedbuck, topi and even leopard.

Day 4 - Lake Victoria - Nairobi - USA
We awaken to a chorus of birdsong. Stately fish eagles, iridescent sunbirds and swift kingfishers start our day, while by nightfall we will have flown to Nairobi , enjoyed dinner in our hotel and continued to the airport to board our evening flight back home. What a day!
