Solio Lodge is nestled in the valley between the dramatic slopes of Mount Kenya and the rolling peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, Solio Lodge promises to be Kenya's most luxurious new opening in 2010.

The Lodge is located on the Solio Reserve, which is part of a private ranch, and is home to a diverse and numerous population of wildlife, including both black and white rhino, which is a rarity.

Exclusivity, privacy, exceptional game viewing and luxurious accommodation are the hallmark at Solio. Solio Lodge has 4 individual cottages plus one family cottage consisting of 2 bedrooms and a shared living area, giving us a total of 6 rooms accommodating up to 12 guests, with the option for extra beds in the rooms for children.

Each room is en-suite with large glass pane windows to take in the panoramic views of the landscape, which is framed by Mount Kenya. Each room has a private lounge area warmed by a corner fire, as well as large bathrooms with double sink, bath and shower.

The rooms are designed for warmth (Solio is high in altitude and can be cold at night), as well as outdoor living with each having a deck in front for relaxation during the day.

* Safaris: By vehicle, on foot, on horseback or by air
* Game Drives: at Solio take place in the Sanctuary (night drives are also permitted)

* By Air: Solio uses Tropic Air’s two Aero spatial helicopters to take guests on a breathtaking trip around the area
* On Horseback: Solio will have horses available for riding – one of the best ways to enjoy viewing wildlife is from the back of a horse

Solio Ranch

Solio Ranch is one of Kenya’s critical rhino habitats. The ranch is a fenced, privately-owned protected area geared toward rhino conservation. The 7,500-acre reserve, 22 km north of Nyeri Town, plays a major part in the protection and breeding black rhinos in Kenya. The rhino is a member of the ‘Big-Five’, which are a key tourist attraction.

Solio Ranch is recognized as one of the most successful private rhino breeding reserves in Kenya. The animals live in harmony with other wildlife, including the buffalo, zebra, giraffe and plains game such as eland, oryx, impala and waterbuck, Thompson's gazelle and warthog. By the end of 2009, Kenya had 635 black rhinos and 353 white rhinos in various conservation areas around the country.

Solio Game Reserve is physically diverse, scenically spectacular, covered by open grass lands, wooded ravines. It is internationally recognized as the most successful rhino breeding reserve in Africa. It is hone to various species such as the endangered Black and White Rhinos, buffalo, eland oryx, lion leopard and cheetah as well as felines and creatures of the night.

Solio Lodge Nearby Places of Interest

Venture further afield and visit the Aberdare National Park and Mt. Kenya. The Aberdare National Park is part of the Aberdare Mountains which are located in the Central Highlands of Kenya. The Kikuyu tribe states in its folklore that this area is home to the god ‘Ngai’.

It is a crucial habitat for several species and the park’s swampy glades, water holes, salt licks and forest areas provide a haven for various Game including Kenya’s indigenous and endangered Black Rhino and elusive Bongo. It is also home to a large number of Black and White colobus and sykes monkeys, one can also enjoy a rare sighting of the Golden Cat.

Excursions to Mt Kenya

Excursions to Mt Kenya are a highlight as you can go trout fishing in the rivers or hiking on the lower slopes. Mt Kenya is the Nation’s highest peak and has an eco system comprised more of vegetation than animals. It is one of the largest indigenous forests remaining in Kenya.

During a hike you can spot various species of monkey, several varieties of antelope and listen for the noisy tree hyrax.
