Camp
Rekero
Camp; Rekero Camp boasts the best guides in
the Masai Mara and has one of the prime locations in
the Reserve helps too. In August or September, when
the wildebeest invade from the Serengeti National Park
in Tanzania, you could well find the migration crossing
the Talek River in front of Rekero Camp. Rekero Camp
sits on a picturesque bend in the Talek River, a seasonal
river that rises in the Loita Hills to the East and
cuts a deep rocky path through the wide Ol Misigiyoi
and Meta Plains to meet the Mara River in the south
of the reserve. The camp is tucked amongst tall deciduous
trees and is designed in such a way that it compliments
rather than competes with its awesome surroundings.
At Rekero, the focus is outside not within the tents.
Even when the migration isn't passing through camp,
there's plenty to see from your tent or from the main
mess at Rekero.
Rekero
Camp is small and exclusive and is up seasonally (June
- October, December - March) and caters for up to fourteen
guests – each tent having an uninterrupted view
of the Talek riverbank. The emphasis is to provide a
personal service that meets the individual needs every
guest. Each of the seven tents is en suite and furnished
to a high standard including small and tasteful finishing
touches such as flowers, glass bottles for water and
magazines. Rekero Camp dining is generally alfresco
and in dinner party style with guests exchanging experiences
and sights over a glass of wine. Rekero Camp chefs produce
appetizing 'farmhouse' meals while special dietary requirements
can be catered for. The camp is unfenced meaning that
during the night elephants, hippos and even leopards
are known to wander amongst the tents. It is for this
reason that Masai Askari (wardens) escort you back to
your tent after darkness.
Rekero
Camp Accommodation
Rekero Camp has eight spacious tents,
(one family tent and seven tents able to accommodate
twins / doubles of triples). All are en-suite with flush
loos and safari showers.

Camp Facilities
Rekero
Camp has 24 hour power to provide
lighting through a solar powered inverter system. Power
is available to charge any electrical items from a central
point. There are no power sockets in the tents. Kerosene
lanterns are situated in front of the tents to provide
subtle lighting to the exterior and front. Mobile phones
do work intermittently in the camp.
Rekero
Tented Camp is a luxurious, owner-hosted property priding
itself on providing a warm welcome. Rekero Tented Camp’s
wild riverside setting is at the heart of the Masai
Mara National Reserve. Being so close to both the Mara
and Talek rivers, Rekero provides guests with an ideal
opportunity to view the annual migration crossings from
the comfort of their armchair.
The owners, Gerard, Rainee and Jackson incorporate Rekero's
motto throughout camp life. The aim is “to promote
Kenyan tourism through the provision of high quality
safari experience, encompassing an insight into animal
behavior, flora, fauna and local cultures.” To
this end high quality game drives and walking safaris
ensure visitors gain a greater understanding of the
wildlife. In addition Masai community visits are available
and are often the highlight of guests’ stay.
Guests wishing to undertake night-time game drives and
more substantial walking safaris, both of which are
only possible outside the national reserve, might like
to consider combining a stay at Rekero Tented Camp with
their new bush camp, Rekero Kidogo. As it is sited outside
the National Reserve, such activities are available
without a lengthy transfer to the outside of Mara Game
Reserve.
Rekero
Camp game drives explore quiet, undeveloped areas of
the Mara while their team of professional Masai safari
guides (each car being assigned a spotter and a driver)
ensure that guests are provided with an in-depth and
truly memorable wildlife experience. The local landscape
is predominantly rolling grassland hills, interspersed
with riverine forests. Expert guides ensure that the
wide range of resident wildlife can be viewed in relative
peace and solitude. Grazing animals such as elephants,
buffalo, impala, topi and various gazelle are common
in this area while it is not unheard of for leopard,
cheetah, lion and rhino all to be spotted in a morning
game drive.
Rekero Camp Activities
Wildlife viewing and bird watching can be done on foot
with experienced Il Dorobo and Masai guides, or in custom-built
four-wheel drive vehicles which allow intimate yet unobtrusive
access to the animals. Visits to one of the guides village
can be arranged, walking can also be arranged in advance
in an area outside the reserve. Picnics in the bush
and sun downers also feature. Trips on a hot air balloon
can be arranged at a local lodge at extra cost.
