Pemba
Island
The
island of Pemba known as 'Al Jazeera Al Khadra' (the
green island, in Arabic) is an island forming part
of the Zanzibar archipelago, lying off the east coast
of Africa in the Indian Ocean. It is situated about
50 kilometres to the north of the island of Zanzibar.
Pemba is a smaller island to the north-east of Zanzibar,
and directly east of Tanga on the mainland. Pemba
Island receives few visitors, and as a result it has
changed very little over the last decade, while Zanzibar's
tourist industry has boomed. It's a great destination
for travelers who want to get away from the tourist
buzz and are happy with simple living.
Natural
forests cover Pemba Island's rolling landscape, along
with plantations that collectively produce more cloves
than Zanzibar. A number of interesting ruins from
the Shirazi era can be found here, as well as some
lovely beaches that offer superb diving conditions.
Traditional bullfights, a throwback to the Portuguese
era, are sometimes held on Pemba.
Pemba
Island is also known as a centre for witchcraft and
traditional medicine. Local travelers come from all
over Tanzania (even Uganda and Zaire) to consult local
traditional healers. Pemba's capital, Chake
Chake, is also its largest town. It contains
a post office, a hospital, and a bank that will exchange
traveler's cheques.
It
has been famous for region industrial fishing, game
fishing scuba diving and beach with solitary stretches
of pristine white local sand.
While
In Pemba Island you should not miss to visit spice
farms where you can have chance to see varieties of
spice such as lemon grass, vetiver, sweet basil, cinnamon
leaves, eucalyptus, ylang ylang, cloves, nutmeg and
the likes. You will also visit the main distillery
factor where you will get explanation on how essential
oil has been distilled by both steam and hydro-distillation.
Pemba
main attractions are the surrounding coral reefs,
the islands are surrounded by unspoiled coral reefs,
and are becoming famous for the spectacular sun and
sea adventure scuba diving and snorkeling. For much
of its history, Pemba has been overshadowed by Zanzibar
Island, its larger and more politically powerful neighbor
to the south.
