Nairobi Tented Camp

Nairobi Tented Camp Life

A safari that will take your breath away

Your day in Nairobi Tented Camp starts with a freshly brewed hot drink bought to your tent before setting off for that infamous safari tradition – an early morning game drive. Be lucky enough to catch the first rays of early morning sun as they burn off the nightly dusting of dew and stirs the plains game gently to life.

After a morning potentially filled with sightings of giraffe, buffalo and leopard return to camp for more warming cups of coffee, freshly baked breads and a hearty cooked breakfast.

The camp is made up of eight double accommodation tents and a central mess tent, from which meals will be served. In the afternoon backgammon games might be enjoyed or a good read can be found from one of the many books in the library.

All meals are carefully crafted to compliment bush living without sacrificing on quality and there is nothing more blissful than sleeping off your three-course lunch in a swaying hammock under the shade of an olive tree.

As the day cools and the sun starts its journey West it will be time for another game drive – a chance to catch that evasive moment where a lion might decide it’s time to feast. Return to camp to drinks and stories around the campfire, before dinner under the vast African star lit sky and ultimately retreating to bed.

Nairobi Tented Camp Guest Tent

Each of our eight tents house accommodation for two people and have their own toilet and shower, so you can enjoy the luxury of en-suite living ‘safaris style’, with hot water heated over a log fire and bought to your shower when you’re ready.

Low watt LED lighting in each of the tents will be run off rechargeable batteries and solar panels, otherwise guests can enjoy the romance of candles and lanterns… a truly authentic tented camp experience.

Comfortable beds are wrapped in choosy blankets and soft towels are at the ready after you’ve washed away the red Nairobi dust from the day. Each of the tents has the following:

• Torch

• LED lighting

• Luggage rack

• Bedside tables

• Twin or double bed

• Writing desk with lamp

• Gas and kerosene lanterns

• View into the valley and forest
• Wardrobe for hanging your clothes

• Carpets of sheep skin rugs on the floor

• Chairs and table on veranda for relaxing
• En-suite toilet with bucket shower and basin

Nairobi Tented Camp Gourmet Meals

All meals at Nairobi Tented Camp are crafted to compliment the authenticity of the safaris experience guests will have the pleasure of enjoying. All meals will be served on a set menu basis, with warming hearty breakfast in the morning. Light invigorating lunches best served in the speckled shade of an olive tree.

Ice cold drinks available from the fully stocked bar in the central mess tent will accompany melt in your mouth camp cooked meals. Tantalizing dinners of light as a feather souffles and tender beef fillet are served under the star filled sky. Everything at Nairobi Tented Camp is homemade and cooked with love.

If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking. The Chefs have a wealth of experience with Vegetarian, Halal and other dishes.

Nairobi Tented Camp Activities

Nairobi Tented Camp has plenty of its own attractions and part of the joy of the place is just enjoying the seclusion of the wilderness. But of course its unique location offers a whole wealth of things to do during your stay, here is a small selection:

Game-drives

An obvious and unmissable part of any safaris adventure best experienced at the start and end of the day.

Guided Walks

Nairobi Forest Camp has special permission for guests to do short guided walks accompanied by a ranger up the Kisembe Valley from the camp.

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

The saying goes – ‘an elephant never forgets’ and this couldn’t be truer, particularly for the baby elephants that are fortunate enough to be rescued by the team at the Sheldrick Trust. So intense is an elephant’s upbringing that even when re-released into the wild the Sheldrick elephants never forget their keepers. | Click Here to visit

Giraffe Centre

In 1974 Jock and Betty Leslie Melville adopted their first giraffe – Daisy. After Daisy came Marlon and before they knew it the Leslie Melville’s were single handedly contributing to the rescue of the rare Rothschild giraffe.

Today their legacy remains in the form of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife an education and breeding programme. In 1974 less than 100 Rothschild giraffe remained, today over 700 are in existence… eight of which can be visited at the giraffe centre in Langata. | Click Here to visit

Karen Blixen Museum

The story of Karen Blixen has been made famous by her book ‘Out of Africa’ which was later turned into a film featuring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. The Karen district of Nairobi was named after this resolute woman and her house stands as a reminder of her incredible belief in Kenya and determination to make her life in Africa a success. | Click Here to visit

National Museum

The Kenya National Museum was set up in colonial times by the famous paleontologist Louis Leakey. It showcases many of the discoveries regarding human origins made by the Leakey family and their Kenyan helpers in many parts of the country where fossil remains may be found.

The museum also has in its collections many artefacts garnered from Kenya’s diverse peoples and the beautiful paintings of them by Joy Adamson of “Born Free” fame. | Click Here to visit

Kazuri Beads Centre

Kazuri Beads in Karen was set up by Lady Susan Wood, the wife of the founder of the Flying Doctors of Africa. A pottery, it is a great place to buy attractive ceramic beads and crockery as gifts to take home. Visitors can also enjoy a tour round the workshop and see all the woman at work. | Click Here to visit

Marula Studios

Marula Studios was recently set up by Julie Church to showcase her incredible array of household accessories made from flip-flops washed up on the beach in the Kiunga Marine National Park on the North Kenya Coast.

A part of the sales revenue is sent back to support Community Conservation projects in this beautiful but poor part of the country. It is a great place to buy unique, hand-made gifts (which supports Marine Conservation) and also now houses some other great gift items such Bakuli Blu pottery. | Click Here to visit

Utamaduni Cultural Centre

Utamaduni was set up to support local craftsmen by giving them a place to show and sell their hand-made artefacts such as carvings, kikois, khangas, shoes, sandals and other gift items, which are unique to Kenya.

You can find almost anything in this warren of little shops, whilst for those a little less retail focused the Veranda restaurant next door, serves perfect ice cold passion juice and good Kenya coffee. | Click Here to visit

Nairobi Tented Camp Conference

The perfect place for some ‘blue sky’ thinking. With the amazing proximity of Nairobi Tented Camp to the airports and Nairobi’s business centre, it is hardly surprising that it makes such a brilliant destination for team meetings and intimate (and unique) corporate events.

A conference tent can be specially set up as required and our mid week corporate special suddenly makes it even more enticing (25% discount*). We’re more than happy to create a special itinerary for your stay, with meetings interspersed with game drives, walks, tea at the exclusive Giraffe Manor and private visits to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, amongst other things.

While we don’t offer you the modern luxuries of electricity and wireless internet – we provide you with the peace and quiet away from your mobile phone and emails to really plan, build teams and afford some time for clear thinking. Infact, we can offer you the type of clarity only really found after spending good quality time in the bush.
