(Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa's biggest game reserve - the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. Mikumi National Park is thus the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometer (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness that stretches East almost as far as the Indian Ocean. A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, a roughly 4 hour drive. Also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flight from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous. Local buses run from Dar-es-salaam to park Headquarters)

Mikumi National Park Detailed Itinerary

Our Mikumi Explorer Safari 3 Days /2 Nights program from Dar-es-Salaam provides the opportunity to explore a true wildlife National Park with good population of predators, prey and plains game. The safari can be experienced on an escape from a Dar -es- Salaam or Zanzibar beach holiday. Mikumi National Park covers 3230 square Kilometers and is 320 kilometers from Dar-es -Salaam. It was gazetted as National Park in August 1964 and is the third largest in Tanzania.

 

The Mikumi National Park shares its boundary in the extreme south, with the Selous Game Reserve and Kilombero Game Controlled Area as one ecosystem and some animals (Wild dogs, lions, Elephant, Buffaloes and Zebras) migrate to and from the northern part of the reserve into Mikumi National Park.

 

The Mikumi 3 Day Safari conveniently starts and ends with a pickup/drop off at a Dar es Salaam city hotel. If you would like for us to arrange pickup you up from a regional (non-safari related flight) or international flight, we can arrange for airport meet, greet and transfer services, city hotels for the overnights before a safari if required or even flights between different parts of Africa (example between Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam) if you have not already booked that flight. In short, we can take care of everything, the only you have to do is arrive - that simple!

Day 1
Dar -es -Salaam Hotel/Airport – Mikumi National Park
You are met at your Dar es Salaam hotel or airport by your transport service. Drive south to Mikumi National Park passing through the city limits with its modern building tapering off to reveal the rural homesteads ending 4 hours later with the slow speed bumps with signs to watch out for the wildlife that could be crossing between the two sections of the Mikumi park. At the park gate, you will be met by the 4X4 camp vehicles. Proceed to the camp for lunch and check in to your tents.

 

After lunch and a little relaxation by the pool, proceed for an afternoon of game viewing in the Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park provides an excellent opportunity to view diverse number of animals and birds in short period of time without too much of driving around. The wildlife viewing experience at Mikumi National Park can be experienced right upon entering the park where guests can encounter baboons, zebras and impalas. Safari guides often state that it is easier to spot a tree-climbing lion in Mikumi National Park than to spot them at Lake Manyara National Park.

 

African Spice guests also have the opportunity to view the unique Mikumi Giraffes that naturalists say seem to be a cross between the reticulated and Masai giraffes. Circumventing around the park trail leads you to the hippo pool, which is best visited during the late afternoons as the distant setting sun and the bobbing hippo heads create perfect pictures. After spotting the wallowing buffalos at the Mkata Flood Plains and elephants congregating near the water hole, return back to the camp for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2
Mikumi National Park

Day 3

Enjoy a morning game drive in the Mikumi National Park with a hearty breakfast at the camp. Transfer to the park gate around noon, where you will be met by your transfer vehicle. Drive to Dar Es Salaam with a drop off at the airport or hotel.
