Lake Elementeita Serena Luxury Camp Activities

Wildlife

Experience the thrill of night game drives, prohibited in National Parks and many Game Reserves, to spot spring hares, eagle owls, bat-eared foxes, hyenas and the elusive aardvark or shy leopard.

Day game drives offer peace and privacy, with chances to watch vast herds of zebras, gazelles, elands, waterbucks and buffalos, as well as family groups of black-backed jackals, warthogs, dik-diks and baboons.

Soysambu protects flourishing breeding herds of endangered Rothschild giraffes, as well as the nationally threatened colobus monkeys. Less common species include the bushbuck, bushpig, steinbok, reedbuck, duiker, caracal, golden and side-striped jackals.

Birds

Witness the spectacle of thousands of great white pelicans flying between Lakes Nakuru and Elementeita daily to fish and watch them feed their chicks on the islands of Elementeita. Watch thousands of lesser and greater flamingos feeding in the shallow waters of Lake Elementeita. Enjoy over 450 species of birds, over 80 of which are waterfowl.

See species of conservation concern, including the Great Egret, the Maccoa Duck, the critically threatened Great Crested Grebe, and many migrant waders. Elementeita often boasts more than 90 % of all Kenyan Black-necked Grebes and Cape Teal.

Other Activities

* Swimming pool

* Massage Services

* Enjoy scenic safari ‘sundowner’ cocktails in the bush

* Romantic or atmospheric bush dinners beneath the stars with flamingos flying overhead

* Visit nearby Lake Nakuru National Park with its white and black rhino and prides of lion

* Exciting day and night game drives are unimpeded by other vehicles in this private wilderness

* Watch the aquatic bird life from four, ideally-placed bird-hides on the shores of Lake Elementeita

* Walk through the bush with an experienced tracker-guide, learning more about the flora and fauna

* Fly over Lake Elementeita in a hot air balloon at sunrise and see all three lakes as well as Mt Kenya

* Learn about our ancestors who lived beside a much bigger lake, millions of years ago, at nearby Kariandusi pre-historic site

Soysambu Wildlife Conservancy

Soysambu Wildlife Conservancy

The nomadic Masai had passed through the area for centuries and the name Elementeita derives from the Masai Ol muteita for “place of dust”. Then in 1897 one of the first pioneers arrived, after walking over 1,000 km south from Berbera on the coast of Somalia. This was the third Baron Delamere, who dedicated his foresight and fortune to pioneering farming methods in the Rift Valley.

He moved to Elementeita in 1906, where he further experimented with sheep and cattle ranching, advised and assisted by the Masai - with whom he had a great rapport. He named his farm Soysambu, Masai for “striated rock” - Sambu is also a cow color.

Today’s Soysambu is a 48,000 acre Wildlife Conservancy, also a RAMSAR site - a wetland of international importance. The alkaline lake’s rocky islands are the only East African nesting site for great white pelicans, while its algae and plankton provides food for vast flocks of flamingos and a multitude of other waterfowl, many of them rare.

The Conservancy protects over 450 bird species and 15,000 wild animals. Rothschild giraffes have found a safe haven for breeding here, while a diverse variety of terrain shelters many species - from herds of giant elands to tiny dik-diks and cliff-dwelling klipspringers.

Night game-drives offer a unique opportunity to spot nocturnal creatures including the curious-looking aardvark and elusive leopard. Walking is also allowed, with chances to experience the miracles of the bush close-up.

Atmospheric bush dinners beneath the stars, spectacular sundowners and hot-air ballooning over this geologically fascinating part of the Great Rift Valley are a few more of the camp’s exciting activities. Lake Nakuru National Park and Kariandusi prehistoric site are also nearby.
