Katolo Homestay & Cottages is situated in the village of Katolo in the Kano Plains, the homestay offers a homely relaxing village atmosphere intermingled with a touch of cultural and community initiatives that leaves one’s stay fulfilled and enjoyable.

 

Katolo Homestay & Cottages is located within walking distance to a village market with shops and a bar. The homestay outdoor comfort includes the traditional grass thatched gazebos and a few rooms of grass thatched traditional roofs which helps visitors blend with culture.


Katolo Homestay & Cottages has laundry services offered on request and guests are free to cook for themselves or have the option of being served from a delicious blended African house menu. Guest rooms are lit by solar and also have the option of using the traditional lantern lamps provided.

 

Katolo Homestay & Cottages accommodates families, individuals and groups. One of our houses has rooms equipped with bunk beds ideal for groups who wish to stay together.

* For groups of more than 10 people, a refundable warranty of 4,000 Kenya Shillings deposit is required but is refundable when no breakages are incurred by the group

Katolo Homestay & Cottages Facilities
Katolo Homestay Block A
The first block is a magnificent block that has 4 rooms with an outside grass thatched kitchen and a common comfortable gazebo where you can relax and enjoy coffee or tea after a long day.

 

It’s beautifully and quiet and offers a good reading atmosphere. The rooms are fully furnished with single beds and a chair and traditional table but has the option of an additional bed. The rooms are smoke free.


Katolo Homestay Block B
This is a four bed roomed house with a big living area. The rooms are equipped with one bunk bed each and have a capacity for 8 people. However, if need be, 4 additional single beds can be added giving it a capacity of 12 occupants, a kitchen can be fixed at one corner of the big living room if the team wants to cook on their own or organized in an outside shade adjacent to the house.


Katolo Homestay Block C
This is a beautifully round house with two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen that can be hired as a whole unit or as separate rooms. It is ideal for a romancing couple looking for a comfortable and cute village environment.

 

The grass roofed rooms give it the coolness away from the African heat. It's very ideal for a family. A grass thatched gazebo furnished with traditional furniture right at the front of the house acts as the resting reading and eating place.

Katolo Homestay & Cottages Sanitary facilities
There are three outside well protected iron sheet cubicles for bathing. If you choose to bath in the evening, their open roof tops expose you to the African skies littered with the stars, moon etc. The two traditional pit latrines are modified to have a seat for your comfort and relaxation.


Laundry services are available at a small fee however; you can decide to wash on your own at the nearby community hand dug water well which uses a hand pump. Detergents can be bought at the community shop while plastic containers/basin shall be provided for your washing.

 

All guests shall be provided with one towel. Rain water harvesting has been done and water for drinking and cooking captured in plastic tanks for use by guests. however, the community shop has bottled water for safe drinking.

There is sufficient parking area in the compound of the home.

Breakfast is served from 8 am to 10 am for those who will be cooked for, lunch is served at 12.30 p.m. while dinner is served at 6.30pm.

 

The check-in and check out-check time

The check-in time is from 11am onwards while check out time is 10 a.m.


Katolo Homestay & Cottages Surroundings Areas
The katolo homestay is located in the most beautifully part of Kano Plains where everything is within easy reach with ample access. The Ahero and Katito markets that offer supermarkets, shops and other social facilities are just a few kilometers away and easily accessible by public transport within minutes.

 

Kisumu city which is Kenya’s third largest city is only 24 kilometers away from the homestay, a 30 minutes five by public transport. The fresh unpolluted serene atmosphere allows you to enjoy amongst other things bird watching, the rice fields, traditional sisal harvesting and processing, traditional farming, livestock and chicken rearing methods.

 

In addition, the homestay organizes for guests to get involved in fulfilling community development activities such as teaching or working in a primary school, teaching and playing with Kindergarten and nursery school children.

 

Other activities include helping in a tree nursery or a garden, feeding of dairy goats and fish pond management, helping in a community library or a community clinic, playing football with local youths, visiting widows and orphans homes and involve you in village social activities and events and festivities.

 

From time to time, Katolo Homestay & Cottages organizes cultural talks dances and plays that help the visitors learn more about the Katolians and the surrounding clans. There is lots of fun.

Katolo Homestay & Cottages has a 9 seater van and a 5 seater vehicle that can be rented or hired by visitors whenever they need to use them at very reasonable cost.

From Kisumu City: by public transport, take a public vehicle from the main bus station that is going past Ahero either to Katito, Sondu or Kisii and ask to be dropped at Ayueyo Canteen Stage.

 

The distance from Kisumu to Ayueyo Canteen is roughly 22 kilometers. Take a motor bike or bicycle taxis to the Katolo Homestay & Cottages. It is also a walking distance to the home since it is only about 2 km.


From Nairobi City: Drop at Ahero market and take a public vehicle going either to Katito, Sondu or Kisii. The distance from Ahero to Ayueyo Canteen is about 8 kilometer. Drop at Ayueyo Canteen and take a bike or walk to the homestay.

From Kisii town: Take public transport going to Kisumu and ask to be dropped at Ayueyo Canteen just before Ahero. The distance is roughly 80 kilometers.
