Karen Blixen Museum is located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark. At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.

The house was used during the filming of the famous movie that immortalized Karen Blixen's book by the same name ('Out of Africa'). The Museum has beautifully landscaped gardens and an all-encompassing Ngong Hills View.

The Giraffe Center is a wonderful and refreshing experience undertaken during African Spice City excursion. The tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them .......There is an impressive variety of bird's species which can be viewed through the year.

Next stop is the Kazuri bead centre-a self-help women project where hand made ceramics and jewellery are produced. A visit to the workshop and craft centre will take around one hour and here you will see the various processes.

A knowledgeable guide will show you around where you will see the whole process from the molding of raw clay through to the glazing, decorating and threading of beads as finished products. The salesroom is attractively laid out and a beautiful place to visit.

Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili and this describes each and every beautifully hand-made ceramic bead which is shaped by hand by the women who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln fired once, glazed and then fired again before being strung.

Giraffe Center Information
The giraffe center is a wonderful and refreshing experience to enjoy as an excursion while in Nairobi. The tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them.

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya (A.F.E.W. Kenya) also known as the Giraffe Center is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, which was founded by Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville in 1979.

This was in a bid to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, which had lost its natural habitat in Western Kenya to agriculture and there were only 130 left in the wild. Funds were raised and four herds were moved to four Parks namely Lake Nakuru National Park, Mwea Game Reserve, Ruma National Park and Nasalot Game Reserve.

Today the Rothschild Giraffe population in Kenya is about 500.The centre today also acts as a place for free environmental education to the Kenyan youth, Conservation of endangered species and Support of other conservation projects all over Kenya.

Kazuri Beads and Pottery Centre Information

Kazuri Beads and Pottery Centre is a popular place for many guests who have just a few hours to spend seeing the sights of Nairobi. The main showroom and workshop is located close to many attractions and tourist venues in the leafy suburbs of Karen.

The History of Kazuri Beads:
The company was originally founded by the late Lady Susan Wood in 1975, who created employment for struggling single mothers in the locality.

Kazuri is still located in its’ original setting in Karen, and the workshop there now has over 340 local women who are employed, most of them still being single mothers.
