Finch Hatton's Camp: Finch Hatton's Camp lies at the heart of Tsavo West National Park - part of Kenya’s single largest game park. Finch Hattons’ 35 acre concession sits on the south western edge of Tsavo West.

A green oasis fed by an underground spring that pumps a constant supply of water into three pools before disappearing back into the volcanic earth.

These pools are home to a resident pod of hippopotamus that spend their days wallowing in the shallows and their nights grazing around the camp. Crocodiles and a healthy population of terrapins and monitor lizards are often seen sunning themselves at the water’s edge while a wide variety of game has been sighted in and around Finch Hatton's Camp which is unfenced so the animals come and go as they please. Bird life at Finch Hatton's Camp is spectacular with over 200 locally recorded species.

Yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea trees surround the tents which are beautifully located and offer comfortable and stylish accommodation in an idyllic setting. Many boast spectacular views directly overlooking the hippo pools and springs.

Denys Finch Hatton was one of Kenya's great adventurers. He devoted his life to exploring the wild in style. In his camp, dinner was served on fine china with silver and crystal, while the gentle strains of Mozart played in the background. Here in Tsavo, where he lived and died, this tradition lives on.

Finch Hattons Camp is located in Tsavo West National Park which combined with neighboring Tsavo East forms Kenya’s largest National Park – and one of the largest in Africa. Its entire ecosystem constitutes 10 million acres of pure, untouched wilderness, encompassing open savannah, riverine and montane forests and freshwater springs.

A dominant feature of Tsavo West is the jet-black lava outcrop known locally as Sheitani (devil) Winding through the hills and peppered with caves; Sheitani is a reminder of the volcanic forces that brought Tsavo into being. It is this massive scale that sets Tsavo apart from Kenya’s other National Parks and Reserves.

Exploring the park from Finch Hattons you will rarely see another vehicle or any other sign of human presence as you track game. Finch Hattons Camp is located in Tsavo West is known for its herds of “red elephants”, their skins stained by the ochre dust and mud.

The park is home to over 12000 elephant – one of the largest populations in East Africa. Other commonly seen species include giraffe, zebra, eland, buffalo, impala, hartebeest, bushbuck, wildebeest and many more.

Finch Hattons Camp is an easy hour’s drive from the camp is Mzima Springs, where a gushing supply of fresh, crystal clear water has created an oasis for wildlife. It is home to several pods of hippo, crocodile and shoals of barbell and catfish. A specially constructed underwater observatory provides visitors with a unique view into the underwater world of Mzima.

Finch Hattons Camp is located in Tsavo West is centrally located between Kenya’s Highlands and the beautiful tropical beaches of the coast. It is an ideal safari destination for those also wishing to visit other parks in the region (Tsavo East, Amboseli, Taita Hills, Chyulu), Kenya’s Northern Parks (Aberdares, Samburu, Shaba) or the Indian Ocean beach resorts of Diani, Malindi and Watamu.

Tsavo in general and Finch Hattons in particular, are ideal for birdwatchers where over 200 species have been recorded.

Finch Hattons is located in Tsavo West National Park and is accessible from the Mtito Andei Gate on the main Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Finch Hattons is easily accessible by charter flight or private aircraft. The all weather airstrip is just 10 minutes drive from the camp.

Finch Hatton's Camp accommodates up to 50 people in spacious safari “tents” attractively constructed in light beige canvas with large “windows”, wooden flooring and a permanent thatched roof.

All have en-suite bathrooms, large mirrors, WC, hot and cold running water and showers and are equipped with a fully stocked mini bar, shaver outlets for 110v and 200v and hairdryers.

The emphasis is on tasteful comfort with either double or twin beds, period brass lamps, writing desks and Afghan ‘Kilims’ All tents are built on elevated platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding springs and forest. Large wooden decks with a comfortable day bed, chairs and table offer a tranquil and relaxing retreat.

Finch Hatton's Camp has an elegantly appointed bar and restaurant and a comfortable private lounge. There is an extensive library of books and an excellent range of classic music- including Denys Finch Hatton's favorite selections of Mozart.

The bar is open all day, and pool service is also provided. Breakfast and lunch are served al fresco on the open-air terrace, with views across the springs and hippo pools, and beyond to the snow capped peak of Kilimanjaro. Dinner is a formal 6-course meal served in the main dining room. Our waiters dress in traditional Kanzu and Fez.

There is a gift shop selling a range of high quality books and gifts, and is open throughout the day. The ideally located pool has a shaded area and is surrounded by indigenous trees.

Guests can enjoy a swim or just relax with their books before the afternoon game drives. Optional laundry service is provided and clothes are returned within 4 hours.

The camp has its own 1200 by 30-meter airstrip, which can accommodate the scheduled flights by Safarilink, Air Kenya or private air charter flights.

* Early morning, mid morning and afternoon game drives in the park are in customized, open sided 4x4 safari vehicles with professional driver guides

* Day Excursions to nearby Amboseli National Park (2.5 hours drive) can be arranged with prior notice. This relatively small park is famous for its massive herds of elephants and proximity to Mt. Kilimanjaro
